This traveling exhibition features over 80 objects by 22 Korean metal artists living in Korea, Canada, and the United States. Ranging from sculptural tabletop works to wearable pieces, the exhibition encompasses both functional and decorative impulses. Although young, all of the participants chosen for the show have worked in the field of metal arts for at least ten years; many are active educators. The exhibition was curated by Komelia Hongja Okim, a Professor of Art in Jewelry and Metalsmithing at Montgomery College, Rockville, Maryland, and a senior Fulbright Exchange Professor to Korea in 1982-83 and 1994-95. She says of the artists in the exhibition: "(they) show strong aesthetic expressions and technical capabilities representing the 'cutting edge' of metal work. While the artists' works display their individualism and diversity, one can sense strong Korean sensitivities in their expressions, whether they are living in Korea, Canada or in America....one can sense the message of their concepts, elements, techniques and expressions interestingly integrating Korean/Asian approaches and Western flair to unite dynamic cross-cultural aesthetic values." Exhibition dates: September 7 - October 8, 2000 Public reception: Thursday, September 7, 4 - 6 p.m Gallery talk by
Komelia Okim: Monday, October 2, noon in the gallery Gallery hours:
