During the summer of 2009, the Sharadin Art Gallery received 167 proposal from artists in 27 countries for our three-week Residency Project. The residency affords the selected artist time, space, and funds to create a site-specific installation. After weeks of deliberation, the exhibition committee selected the collaborative project proposed by Brooklyn-based artist Nene Humphrey in collaboration with artist Julie DeLano, and sound designer Roberto Lange.

Circling the Center is an intersection of performance, installation and collaborative art-making between a sculptor, a weaver, a sound designer and members of the Kutztown community. The piece uses the drum circle, one of the oldest forms of human communication, the craft of Victorian mourning braiding, and the sounds generated during the fabrication process as its conceptual underpinnings and physical structure.
The piece is a continuation of Humphrey’s work that echoes scientific patterns found in DNA. Circling the Center will also incorporate performance and cross-disciplinary elements including sound. For many years, Humphrey has used the human body to explore themes of strength and vulnerability. As an artist-in-residence at Joseph LeDoux’s neuroscience laboratory at New York University, Humphrey has observed and recorded dense images of the amygdala, the part of the brain where fear and anxiety reside. From those images drawn through high-powered microscopes, Humphrey created a series of layered drawings that became the inspiration for Circling the Center. Ms. Humphrey’s work was featured on the cover of the June 2009 issue of ARTnews.
