Medical Technology as a Career

Kutztown University Program Requirements

Students have graduated from this program since 1976 and are working throughout the state in hospital laboratories and in large and small industries.

It is a four-year program in which students are required to complete:

  • 42 credits of General Education in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
  • 23 credits in Biology including: principles of biology, zoology, microbiology, medical microbiology (with a strong emphasis on immunology), genetics, and physiology.
  • 26 credits in Physical Science and Mathematics including: inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, biochemistry (strongly recommended), algebra, and statistics.
  • 30 credits--one calendar year--of Clinical Internship at a cooperating hospital including courses in the following: clinical chemistry, clinical microbiology, clinical immunology/serology, clinical immunohematology, clinical hematology/coagulation, and clinical seminar.
The three years of coursework on campus must be completed before the student begins their clinical year. It is the student's responsibility to apply for admission to the hospital program, although the Medical Technology Coordinator assists students in this process. Admission is on a competitive basis. After completion of the program, students are eligible to sit for national registry certification examinations.
