General Competencies

A graduate of the Secondary Education/Science program will be able to:

Teach competently all the course offerings and special programs within his/her field of certification at the Middle, Junior or Senior High School level.

Develop an understanding of, and an ability to make application of, the scientific method in all related science course offerings.

Assume a leadership role in curriculum planning, evaluation, and innovative science programming.

Demonstrate and incorporate in his/her teaching a breadth of laboratory and field experience.

Demonstrate an understanding of the needs of students from varying ability groups and backgrounds in developing, implementing and evaluating science education programs.

Incorporate meaningful programs and experiences in his/her teaching that provide students with an understanding of the relationship of science and technology to community and world problems.

Earth-Space Science

Concentrations in Astronomy, Geology and Marine Science are available within the Earth-Space Science field of certification.

A graduate of the Earth-Space Science field of certification will be able to:

Demonstrate appropriate competence in Mathematics and the basic sciences of Biology, Chemistry and Physics.

Demonstrate an understanding of the processes of the physical and historical development of the lithosphere, the atmosphere, the hydrosphere, and the astronomical environment.

Demonstrate appropriate competence in each of the Earth and Space Sciences to include: Astronomy, Geology, Marine Science and Meteorology.

Demonstrate an understanding of the impact of technology on the Earth and on living things and their environment.

Participate in fieldwork and demonstrate mastery of techniques for using a local environment as an outdoor laboratory for demonstration, modeling, experimentation and research.

Demonstrate an understanding of geomorphic processes, participate in field experiences in Geology and Marine Science and a Practicum in Astronomy and Meteorology.

In addition to the above objectives common to all three concentrations, the graduate will demonstrate specific knowledge, understanding and skill unique to the selected concentration. This will be achieved through additional study and course work in the concentration.
