General Competencies

A graduate of the Secondary Education/Science program will be able to:

Teach competently all the course offerings and special programs within his/her field of certification at the Middle, Junior or Senior High School level.

Develop an understanding of, and an ability to make application of, the scientific method in all related science course offerings.

Assume a leadership role in curriculum planning, evaluation, and innovative science programming.

Demonstrate and incorporate in his/her teaching a breadth of laboratory and field experience.

Demonstrate an understanding of the needs of students from varying ability groups and backgrounds in developing, implementing and evaluating science education programs.

Incorporate meaningful programs and experiences in his/her teaching that provide students with an understanding of the relationship of science and technology to community and world problems.

Physics

A graduate of the Physics field of certification will be able to:

Demonstrate competence in concentrated studies in Physics (e.g. Mechanics, Electricity and Magnetism, and Atomic and Nuclear Energy) and the broad conceptual schemes of Science.

Demonstrate an understanding of appropriate skills and safety procedures that are necessary for proper experimentation.

Demonstrate the ability to use mathematical skills needed for the quantitative and qualitative scientific analysis.

Demonstrate competence in using the microcomputer and other instruments necessary for scientific measurement and analysis.

Demonstrate an understanding of the interrelationships of the individual sciences.

Demonstrate an understanding of the ethical and human implications of such contemporary issues as nuclear power plant sites and waste disposal, long-range policies, and the effects of radiation on living systems.

Demonstrate competence in designing, developing and evaluating field demonstration and laboratory instructional activities, and in using special skills and techniques with equipment and facilities which support and enhance curricula and instruction in Physics.
