Welcome!Welcome to the Kutztown University Elementary Education Department Home Page! This web page is part of the Kutztown University website that you may browse to become more fully acquainted with our University. The faculty members at Kutztown are dedicated to teaching which fulfills our mission as a center to prepare the educational leaders for tomorrow.The Department of Elementary Education offers programs leading to the Bachelor of Science in Education degree in Elementary Education with dual certification programs in Early Childhood and Special Education. The graduate programs offered include a Master of Education degree in Elementary Education and a Master of Education degree in Reading. In addition, programs are available that extend certification as a Reading Specialist and in Elementary Education for teachers who have initial certification in other fields. The faculty in the Elementary Education Department provide instruction in several major areas and segments of a very complex program. Specific faculty members are responsible for teaching in one or several of the following areas: Early Childhood Education; the Early Learning Center (Nursery and Kindergarten); Reading Concentration; the Professional Semester Program; the Clinical Experience and Practicum. Faculty outside of the Elementary Education Department also teach numerous Elementary Education courses that are required in the program. In addition, faculty in other academic departments work closely with the Elementary Education Department through the offering of academic concentrations. Any teacher candidate who does not choose Elementary Education/Early Childhood Education or Special Education/Elementary Education as his/her major is required to declare a concentration. AdvisementElementary Education teacher candidates will meet with their advisors at least once each semester. At the first advisement appointment during the first semester, the advisor will review the following topics: the Praxis Test Series; the requirements for Observation in the Field (see below); the schedule and procedures for Professional Semester; and, the assignments and procedures for the Clinical Experience and Practicum.Advisors will explain the thirty hour observation requirement and provide teacher candidates with a journal entitled "Guidelines for Fulfilling 30-hour Observation Requirements." The 30 hours must be documented by February 1 for Fall professional semester and by September 2 for Spring professional semester. Registration for professional semester classes will be blocked if these requirements are not met.
