The Department of Elementary Education offers programs leading to the Bachelor of Science in Education degree in Elementary Education with dual certification programs in Early Childhood and Special Education. The graduate programs offered include a Master of Education degree in Elementary Education and a Master of Education degree in Reading. In addition, programs are available that extend certification as a Reading Specialist and in Elementary Education for teachers who have initial certification in other fields.
The faculty in the Elementary Education Department provide instruction in several major areas and segments of a very complex program. Specific faculty members are responsible for teaching in one or several of the following areas: Early Childhood Education; the Early Learning Center (Nursery and Kindergarten); Reading Concentration; the Professional Semester Program; the Student Teaching Program.
Faculty outside of the Elementary Education Department also teach numerous Elementary Education courses that are required in the program. In addition, faculty in other academic departments work closely with the Elementary Education Department through the offering of academic concentrations. Any teacher candidate who does not choose Early Childhood Education of Special Education as his/her major is required to declare a concentration.
Advisors will explain the thirty hour observation requirement and provide teacher candidates with a handout entitled "Guidelines for Fulfilling 30-hour Observation Requirements." The 30 hours must be documented by the end of the second week of the semester prior the student's professional semester. Registration for professional semester classes will be blocked if this requirement is not met.
