Expectations for Students
A teacher candidate completing the professional semester in elementary education will be able to:
- Demonstrate competence in instructional planning, implementation, evaluation and reflection.
- Demonstrate a fundamental knowledge of the academic disciplines in the liberal arts and sciences.
- Demonstrate knowledge of the content and methodology for teaching language arts, focusing upon language development, oral and written language skills, penmanship, reading and children's literature.
- Demonstrate competency in the area of reading as one of the five interrelated language arts with emphasis upon decoding and comprehension strategies, reading skills needed for content area learning, materials and programs for reading instruction and assessment of reading skills and strategies.

- Demonstrate knowledge of the content and methodology for teaching mathematics, including knowledge of the number systems, numeration systems, number theory, problem solving techniques, geometry, measurement, probability, statistics and computer assisted instruction.
- Demonstrate a knowledge of the content and methodology for teaching elementary social studies, focusing on the content disciplines, the skills developed and the citizenship values infused into the various curricular models in use.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the unique learning characteristics of elementary and middle level students and the relationship of such characteristics to the development of appropriate curricula and instructional practices.
- Demonstrate knowledge of individual and group instructional strategies.
- Demonstrate the ability to analyze his/her own teaching style and effectiveness through the use of appropriate self-evaluation techniques.
- Demonstrate the ability to utilize appropriate technology in classroom instruction.
- Demonstrate an awareness of contemporary issues and practices in elementary education.
- Demonstrate an awareness of appropriate strategies for classroom management and discipline.
- Demonstrate appropriate skills in oral and written English.
- Demonstrate the assertiveness necessary to assume the role of teacher in an elementary classroom.
- Demonstrate a willingness to put forth the effort necessary to become an exemplary teacher.
