The Department of Library Science
and the Department of Instructional Technology, once separate
within the College of Education, are now merged. The new
department will bring fresh innovations to undergraduate and
graduate programs. Dual concentration tracks are currently being
planned for those interested in completing a master's program
with teaching certification and Instructional Technology focus.
The Instructional Technology
program was formerly the AV Communications and Technology
Department. The IT program expands
educators' horizons in the field of non-print technology,
training them to effectively integrate technologies into their
lessons.
The Instructional Technology
program offers students three tracks of graduate level courses.
These tracks are designed primarily for educators looking to
gain graduate credits in Instructional Technology, or move into
an IT position.
The Library Science program at
Kutztown University of Pennsylvania prepares skilled
professional library information specialists who are cognizant
of their importance in a diverse, rapidly changing global
society.
The program began in 1921 as an undergraduate degree (B.S.Ed.). The
masters program began in 1965 as an M.Ed. Since 1972, the basic professional curriculum has led to the
Master of Library Science degree (MLS). Currently, Kutztown offers both a
major in education with a major in Library Science and certification,
and a Master of Library Science with initial or extension of PA
certification (K-12).
Students completing either of these programs are prepared as professional librarians to evaluate, select, collect, organize, store, retrieve and disseminate information. The primary emphasis of the program is upon school librarianship.
The various program tracks have been designed to include the traditional roles of librarianship as well as the standard and emerging technologies. Additionally, the program balances theoretical foundation with practical implementation.
Kutztown is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools and has program approval by the Pennsylvania Department of Education. Both the undergraduate and graduate Library Science programs are accredited by the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE).
