Admissions
An admission file for all
applicants who meet the minimum requirements for acceptance into
the College of Graduate Studies is forwarded to the department.
The final decision to admit a student to a graduate degree
program at Kutztown University is based upon an analysis of
objective and subjective criteria by the program faculty.

Candidacy
Application for candidacy should be made after completing 12 credits and before completing 24 credits of graduate study.
Forms are available in the Library Science office and at the Graduate Office.
It is the responsibility of the student to apply for candidacy.
Also, please note that applying for candidacy is not considered application for graduation.
Students may not enroll in individualized instruction courses if they have not been accepted as a candidate.
Comprehensive Examinations
A Master’s Degree in Library Science requires successful completion of a comprehensive exam after being accepted as a candidate.
The examination consists of questions from LIB 500: Methods of Research: Library, and two out of the three literature courses: LIB 510: Literature of the Humanities, LIB 520: Literature of the Social Sciences and LIB 530: Literature of Science and Technology.
Also included is a question on current technology in Librarianship.
Forms are available in the Library Science Office. Comprehensive exams are generally taken the semester of graduation; candidates should apply at the beginning of the semester.
Graduate Assistantships
Interested in becoming a graduate assistant?
On-campus positions are available in various departments, including Library Science.
Positions include paid tuition and an annual stipend of $7500, distributed in biweekly paychecks.
Graduate assistants are required to take a minimum of three graduate
courses (nine credits) a semester and to work 20 hours per week in the assigned department.

30-Hour Field Observation
The 30-hour Field Observation experience is designed to provide an opportunity for the student to view the wide variety of activities in a library/media situation. The field observation will provide a chance for you to further clarify your career goals and interests in the library/media field.
Initial certification graduate student hours must be completed before they will be cleared for student teaching.
You will spend five days in the field. At least two days will be in an elementary school, and two days in a secondary school. The fifth day may be an area of your choice. Your role is that of an observer.
We recommend that you choose a
variety of settings, including rural and urban school libraries.
