TVR 010, Introduction to Electronic Media

Course Description

Media A survey of the historical, technical, economic, regulatory, and social aspects of the electronic media. Traditional broadcast radio and broadcast and cable television systems are considered, as well as satellite, Web, and cellular media delivery. The convergence of mass media technologies and content is given particular consideration. The course also introduces students to electronic media programming, advertising, and audience measurement.

Course Description

An introduction to the sound medium and its applications for Electronic Media majors. The fundamental properties of sound are introduced and related to modern audio production techniques. Students conduct lab exercises in digital recording, editing, multi-track mixing, CD burning and file compression. Limited enrollment.

TVR 055, Fundamentals of Video Production

Course Description

An introduction to the complete process of video production for professional use. Students learn how video works, how to plan a video production, how to operate various production equipment, how to produce a program, how to evaluate the quality of finished video productions, and how to determine the appropriate type of production for a given circumstance.

TVR 070, Scriptwriting for Electronic Media
3 contact hours, 3 credits

Course Description

An introduction to the craft of writing for radio and television, and newer technologies. Students learn the process and appropriate formats needed for writing commercials, PSAs, news, and promos, as well as long-form programs, such as documentaries, non-broadcast scripts, and dramatic narratives. Students will incorporate the balancing of audio and video, attention to video composition, and shot descriptions.

TVR 107, Broadcast Newswriting Workshop
2 contact hours, 1 credit

Course Description This course presents the basic concepts of broadcast writing style used in the development of radio news stories. Fundamental principles of writing narration introduced in the core-writing course are expanded upon and new concepts in newsgathering and reporting are introduced. Students write and produce short news reports to be broadcast on Kutztown University's Radio Station.

TVR 113, Advertising & Sales in the Electronic Media

Course Description

A survey of the structure and process of advertising and time sales in the electronic media. Students are introduced to both local and national advertising campaigns and techniques used for time sales in radio, television, cable and the Internet.

TVR 130, Media Theory and Aesthetics

Course Description

Beginning with a treatment of the process of human communication, this course introduces students to various theories of how media content reaches and affects audience members. The course follows the traditional approach to aesthetics as an understanding and perception of "beauty." It seeks to apply that approach to media production by exploring fundamental aesthetic considerations for producing effective media content. Specific treatment is given to such topics as narrative structure, visual and sound cues, image framing, lighting, and shot sequencing.

Course Description

This course presents advanced techniques, equipment and applications of lighting for video production. Topics introduced in the basic production course are expanded upon, and new concepts will be introduced. Students conduct lab exercises in camera sensitivity, color balancing, image control, bounce light, lighting interiors, exteriors, single subject interviews, 2-person interviews, master shots and close-ups Prerequisite: TVR 055 or permission of the instructor.

TVR 170, Programming and Sales in Electronic Media

Course Description

An introduction to the theory and practice of programming and sales in the electronic media, including broadcast radio and television, cable TV, satellite radio and TV, and online video and audio. Specific program formats and schedules are explored with emphasis on audience analysis and sales techniques appropriate to each format.

Course Description

Practical work in various phases of the operation of a radio station.

Prerequisite: Electronic Media core and TVR 110, or permission of the instructor.

TVR 217, Studio Production Workshop
2 contact hours, 1 credit

Course Description

Practical experience in various television studio production crew positions. The student serves as a camera operator, floor manager, audio technician, assistant director, and in other crew positions. Lighting techniques and set design are also discussed.

Prerequiste: Electronic Media core.

TVR 220, Communication Law
3 contact hours, 3 credits

Course Description

This course introduces students to state, federal and case laws as well as Constitutional issues pertaining to the field of media. It traces their historical development and will explore their pertinence to today's technology and society. The course allows students to develop an understanding of legal rights and responsibilities and an understanding of the legal system. The course covers material such as freedom of the press, copyright, contracts, defamation, privacy issues, access to information, free press and fair trials.

Prerequisite: 30 credits completed or permission of the instructor.

TVR 226, Ethical Issues in the Electronic Media
3 contact hours, 3 credits

Course Description

This course considers ethical issues associated with mass communication activities, with an emphasis on the electronic media. After beginning with a general consideration of the process of ethical inquiry and the conflicts in values as experienced by professionals working in the electronic media, the course then examines specific types of programming. Case studies and examples are used throughout the course to illustrate the topic at hand.

Prerequisites: TVR 010 and TVR 220, or permission of the instructor. Limited enrollment.

TVR 227, Promotion & Continuity Workshop

Course Description

Practical work in various aspects of promotion and continuity. Students work with producers to promote University radio and cable TV programming.

Prerequisite: Electronic Media core or permission of instructor.

TVR 250, Video Engineering & Troubleshooting

Course Description

Students learn basic video troubleshooting, basic technical terminology and concepts, operation of broadcast test equipment, and alignment and adjustment of video production equipment.

Prerequisite: TVR 050 and TVR 055.

TVR 255, Video Field Production
6 contact hours, 3 credits

Course Description

This course introduces the student to basic single-camera field production. Students learn planning and production strategies for single-camera field productions. Emphasis is placed on shooting to edit. Students are introduced to fundamentals of non-linear editing. Lighting and audio techniques for field production are treated in depth.

Prerequisite: TVR 055.

TVR 306, Audio Post-Production
6 contact hours, 3 credits

Course Description

This course examines audio post-production techniques for video. Topics introduced in TVR 050, Audio Production, and TVR 255 Video Field Production, are expanded upon and new audio production concepts are introduced. Students conduct lab exercises in signal processing, multi-track recording procedures, and audio post-production techniques for video. Limited enrollment.

Prerequisite: TVR 255 or permission of instructor.

TVR 320, Electronic Media Management

Course Description

An examination of the structures and functions of various electronic media systems, with an emphasis on effective management. The course applies basic management principles to the specific demands of the electronic media industry. On-line and printed resources are used to provide students with an accurate understanding of the current state of the industry and knowledge of developing trends. Facility and departmental management are considered, with emphasis on financial and personnel issues.

TVR 331, Copyright and Intellectual Property
3 contact hours, 3 credits

Course Description

This course serves as an introduction into the basics of copyright and intellectual property issues. Topics include Copyright Basics, Fair Use criteria, and Multi-Media copyright issues through the Digital Millenium Act. Students learn what protections copyright laws afford to creators of works, how to obtain permissions to use copyrighted works, how to secure copyright for works they may prepare now or in the future and protect those works from unauthorized use by others as allowed by law. Students also explore the many resources available dealing with copyright and intellectual property. Students are required to have internet access for e-mail, on-line discussion, searches and access to course resources.

Prerequisite: TVR 220 or permission of the instructor.

TVR 347, Newsgathering Workshop
2 contact hours, 1 credit

Course Description

This course provides practical experience with producing insert materials for television news programs. Students will use electronic newsgathering (ENG) techniques to write, shoot, and edit local segments for the campus newscast. They also have the opportunity to use professional video and copy sources to produce national and international segments.

Prerequisite: TVR 255.

TVR 357, Field Videography Workshop
2 contact hours, 1 credit

Course Description

This course requires the student to make practical use of production techniques in single-camera field production. Students further develop skills with a field camera such as composition, aesthetic considerations and shooting for editing. Field audio techniques are also explored. Students work as part of a production team with students enrolled in TVR 367 and TVR 387.

Prerequisite: TVR 255.

TVR 365, Video Post-Production
6 contact hours, 3 credits

Course Description

This course focuses on video post-production equipment and techniques. Students produce programs using advanced post-production techniques.

Prerequisite: TVR 255.

TVR 367, Post-Production Workshop
2 contact hours, 1 credit

Course Description

The student will gain practical video post-production experience by editing feature stories from raw videotapes shot by students enrolled in TVR 357 and produced by students in TVR 387. The edited features and related materials are then be edited into video programs under the direction of student producers enrolled in TVR 387.

Prerequisites: TVR 365.

TVR 370, Selected Topics in Electronic Media
1-6 clock hours, 1-3 credits

Course Description

This course is an in-depth study of an electronic media topic of current interest. The course content is normally different each time the course is offered. The course may be repeated for credit to a maximum of 6 credit hours, provided that the same topic is not repeated.

Prerequisite: Junior standing.

TVR 375, Event and Documentary Production
6 clock hours, 3 credits

Course Description

This course integrates studio and field production techniques, and emphasizes producing and directing for single and multi-camera productions in the styles of 'live television' and documentary. It builds upon skills introduced in earlier video, audio, lighting, and editing courses. All aspects of the production process are further expanded on and explored for studio and field production situations. Students are introduced to multi-camera field production by conducting site surveys and planning and producing several remotes. The students experience the planning and processes involved in documentary production as they produce video in the documentary style

Prerequisite: TVR 255 and TVR 365 or permission of the instructor. Enrollment limited to Electronic Media majors and minors.

TVR 379, Independent Study in Electronic Media
1-3 credits

Course Description

The student pursues an area of interest under the direction of a faculty member. An appropriate creative product such as a research paper, case study, or video production is developed. Repeatable to a maximum of 6 semester hours.

Prerequisites: Jr. or Sr. standing and permission of the instructor.

TVR 380, Senior Seminar in Electronic Media
3 contact hours, 3 credits

Course Description

This course serves as a forum for student's various internship experiences. It also prepares students for the process of finding and applying for positions, and building networks in the electronic Specific attention is given to the freelance aspect of the business. Limited to Electronic Media majors. Permission of the Department required.

TVR 387, Program Producers Workshop
4 contact hours, 2 credits

Course Description

The student is assigned the role of producer or co-producer for a weekly, 30-minute cable program. The student works with other students enrolled in TVR 357 and TVR 367 to organize feature segments for inclusion in the program and selects appropriate features to be edited into a program of air quality.

Prerequisite: TVR 255 and permission of the instructor.

TVR 390, Senior Internship in Electronic Media
12 credits

Course Description

The Senior Internship in Electronic Media is a program that is designed to give the student a full-time, full semester, supervised practical experience in an electronic media-related facility, or appropriate corporate, medical, or educational site. The internship must be taken concurrently with TVR 380.

Prerequisites: Senior status, completion of all required Electronic Media courses, a minimum 2.00 G.P.A. overall and in the Electronic Media courses, and departmental approval.

TVR 399, Honors Seminar in Electronic Media & Society
3 contact hours, 3 credits

Course Description

An interdisciplinary examination of the relationship between the radio, television and internet media, and American society. Students are introduced to the literature on media effects and to simple research techniques, which will help them develop their own understanding of the relationship between these powerful media and the society in which they operate. Specific attention will be given to media in relation to: children, women and minorities, politics, and the Church.

Prerequisite: Enrollment in the Honors Program or permission of the Honors Committee.

TVR 400 Electronic Media Research

Course Description

An introduction to research terminology and methods, including basic statistical procedures. Emphasis is placed on developing the students' ability to identify appropriate areas for research and to formulate specific research questions. Attention is also given both to the structure of the electronic media industry and to the role research efforts play in the functioning of that industry. Various research tools and techniques are applied to current issues in electronic media as an introduction to applied research in the field, a foundation for other courses and to help graduate students with the foundations of thesis research.
