TRAFFIC

Children and Traffic

Using a combination of census block data for 2000 and highway traffic count data we are able to look at the distribution of children in relation to traffic.  Fifty-two percent of all children live in a census block that is within 250 feet of a state highway carrying more than 5,000 vehicles per day.  The highway links carrying more than 5,000 vehicles per day account for only 546 of the 1,276 state highway segments within the county; however, these links account for 86.27% of the vehicles moving on the state highway network within Berks County.
