Geography Major Planning Track

Governments of cities, townships, and counties employ a large proportion of our graduates as land use and environmental planners. Planning departments hire our students because they know how to analyze spatial data, usually in concert with geographic information systems technology, to help solve social, economic, environmental, and political problems at multiple scales.

As planners, our graduates enter a political milieu of groups whose interests involve municipal governance and finance, land preservation, land use, urban planning, and transportation. Indeed, former graduates have suggested that the Department of Geography offer a suite of courses that would better prepare our graduates for the political aspects of planning.

To this end, the Department of Geography, in consultation with the Department of Political Science, has designed a multi-disciplinary Planning Track.  The track integrates relevant courses in the fields of geography and political science.
