KU Summer Program in Austria/Southern Germany

Location:
After five exciting days in Munich and traveling to sites in Bavaria, the Program moves to its home base in Telfes, Austria. Telfes, a scenic alpine village in the Stubai valley 15 kilometers south of Innsbruck, will serve as headquarters for class instruction, site visits, and excursions.

Application:
Applications for the KU Summer Program in Austria/Southern Germany are available from the Department of Modern Language Studies and the Office of International Studies. Selection is based on a variety of factors that include, but are not limited to, Program objectives, cultural adaptability, language ability and academic standing. This year's Program is limited to 30-35 students and the application process will be competitive.
APPLICATION DEADLINE: FEBRUARY 29, 2008

Classes, Study Sites and Excursions:
Classes will be held Monday through Thursday in the morning. Excursions will vary depending on the course you take and your own personal interests. Destinations may include, but are not limited to, Munich, Salzburg, the Neuschwanstein castle, Berchtesgaden, Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Nuremberg, Passau, and Dachau. Afternoons are for study and free time as are weekends beginning Thursday afternoon for those wanting to explore this corner of Europe on their own. Organized excursions will also be planned for the weekends. Excursions will be limited to the budget available.

Accommodations:
Students will spend the first 4-5 nights of lodging in Munich and reside in the Hotel Montana (three stars) in Telfes, Austria, a small alpine village 20 minutes south of Innsbruck for the remainder of the Program.

Cost:
The final cost of the 2007 KU Summer Program in Austria/Southern Germany has yet to be determined. Currency exchange rate fluctuations may cause the fee to increase slightly, but the figures below should provide a good estimate.
PA Resident - Undergraduate: $2760.80
Non-PA Resident - Undergraduate $3843.70

Additional Costs:
Flight: Course participants are responsible for making their own plane reservations. You will be informed which flights the instructors will be taking if you wish to join them. Airfares are notoriously volatile and range for the moment (Fall 2007) from $800 to $1200.
Meals: You will be responsible for all meals while in Munich (4-5 days) and the evening meals only while in Telfes.
International Student Identity Card: This ID costs $22 and is available at the KU International Studies Office, 204 Stratton Administration Center, 610-683-1390.
US Passport Fee: Currently $97.00

Documentation:
Students must have a valid passport prior to departure. Current price $97. Be advised that the procedure for passport application may take up to two months.

Insurance:
All students must have medical insurance with international coverage. Kutztown University, the Department of Modern Language Studies and individuals associated with the KU Summer Program in Austria/Southern Germany are not responsible for the personal wellbeing of students who choose to participate in the Program. You should check to see if your current medical insurance covers you overseas.

Required Insurance:
International Student ID - $22. Applications at the KU International Studies Office, 204 Stratton Administration Center. for more information on coverage: www.myISIC.com.

Code of Conduct:
Students who participate in the Program are still governed by the Kutztown University rules and regulations as stipulated by the Kutztown University of Pennsylvania Undergraduate Catalog and The Key: Student Handbook. In addition, all US, German and Austrian codes of conduct must be respected. Kutztown University, the KU Departments of Modern Languages and History, the KU Office of International Studies, the Program Coordinator and Program Instructors are neither responsible, nor liable for the conduct of the students. Students participating in the Program will also sign a code of conduct specific to the KU Summer Program in Austria/Southern Germany.

Courses:
All of the courses in this program are taught by Kutztown University faculty. Students may take only one course. Upon successful completion of the requirements of the course, three semester hours credit will be earned. A letter grade will be given and no "Incompletes" will be issued.

GER 104 - Intermediate Germany IV (3 credit hours)
In this intermediate language course, students continue to develop basic skills in aural comprehension, speaking, reading and writing. Readings are supplemented with independent texts pertaining to Austrian culture, society, history and literature.

GER 360 - Study Abroad Experience (3 credit hours)
This course will challenge students to become "cultural learner" by examining German, Swiss and Austrian art, music, theatre and literature that treat the theme of the individual adapting to a foreign culture. While constructing a German-speaking cultural landscape through coursework and fieldwork, students will evaluate their evolving relationship to German and Austrian cultural variables through a series of journaling and self-reflection assignments.  (course given in English)

HIS 227 - History of the Holocaust (3 credit hours)
This course is a study of the Holocaust in Nazi-dominated Europe. It focuses on Nazism's mass murder of European Jewry and other targeted groups that produced a mosaic of ethnic, social and political victims. Special study will be devoted to historical sites and museums in Austria and southern Germany that center on the rise of the Nazis, their radical antisemitism of the 1930s, and genocidal Programs during World War II.
