Wallops Island Marine Science Consortium

In the water A unique cooperative agreement between Kutztown University and 15 other academic institutions allows KU to offer a comprehensive Marine Science program. The Marine Science Consortium, Inc., a nonprofit corporation created by the member institutions, allows them to pool their resources of facilities, instructors, and equipment. In 1974, these resources were used to establish the Wallops Island Marine Science Center adjacent to Chincoteague Bay, the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge and the Assateague National Sheashore, VA. Primary facilities include: biology laboratories, marine geology and chemistry laboratories, classrooms, library, administrative offices, cafeteria, equipment rooms, plus housing for 350 students and faculty. Facilities are available at the center for marine investigations in geological, physical, chemical, and biological investigations of terrestrial, marsh and marine environments. Three vessels, from 38'-50' in length, are available for educational and research purposes inshore or on the high seas. Numerous small boats are also available for projects near the station. R.V.
