  • Summer Music Festival
    At Kutztown University

    June 20 – 25, 2004


    The Summer Music Festival at Kutztown University presents an exciting opportunity for dedicated high school instrumental music students. Students will spend the week with fellow musicians studying, rehearsing, and performing under the guidance of Department of Music Faculty from Kutztown University and other professional musicians.

    Program Highlights:
    • Flexible format allows student musicians to be involved in either the full orchestra or chamber music ensembles
    • Opportunity to participate in exciting master classes as well as open rehearsals
    • Participants can choose from a variety of class topics.
    The Summer Music Festival is about stimulating and challenging participants in their continued development of individual and ensemble performance skills and inspiring them to more deeply enrich their understanding and fondness for music.
    Festival Orchestra:
    • As many as 80 participants will be selected to rehearse and perform with the Summer Festival Orchestra, which will present a culminating concert on Saturday, June 26, 2004.
    • Those students not selected for the Festival Orchestra (due to instrumentation) will participate in chamber ensembles as part of the culminating concert.
    • All participants will have full access to the teaching as well as artist faculty throughout the week.

    Saxophone Festival:

    • The Saxophone Festival is open to students of all ages.  A minimum of twelve participants will be required for this festival.

    • All aspects of saxophone performance will be covered including both classical solo, quartet and large ensemble repertoire as well as jazz standards, improvisation and combo performance.

    • Participants will have a variety of performance opportunities from local jazz clubs to on campus formal concerts. 

    • Participants can choose from a variety of elective class topics offered as part of the Summer Festival.

    Housing & Practice:

    • Housing will be on campus in a residence hall dedicated to the Summer Music Festival. All rooms will be single occupancy, and will serve as practice space.
    • Students with large instruments will be assigned practice rooms in the Old Main building, home of the Department of Music.
    Application & Audition:
    • Each applicant should prepare a short (5 minute) audio cassette (or CD) of a performance that demonstrates your level of accomplishment on your instrument and submit this recording, along with the completed application form and a nonrefundable $50.00 deposit by May 1, 2004.
    • Students will be notified before May 15, 2004 of their acceptance into the Summer Festival program.
    • Students not accepted into the Festival Orchestra who do not wish to participate in the chamber music program and therefore will not be attending will have their deposit refunded.
