Frequently Asked Questions

  1. When will band camp take place this year?

  2. The dates for the 2008 Summer Band Camp will begin on Thursday, August 14 for Drumline and Color Guard. The brass and woodwinds will report on Saturday, August 16. More detailed reporting times will be available in the June newsletter. The camp will conclude on Friday, August 22 with an evening exhibition in the stadium. 3. What is the time commitment for the Marching Unit?

  4. The time commitment consists of 4 hours of rehearsal during the week, Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 3:00-4:20. Attendance at all rehearsals is mandatory. Please keep this in mind when registering for classes. Rehearsals are scheduled so that conflicts with other classes are kept to a minimum. The Marching Unit will perform at all home football games, selected away games, and several exhibitions each season. Drumline and Color Guard usually schedule additional sectionals. While in the Marching Unit many members also perform in the Jazz Band, Orchestra, and various smaller ensembles as well as keeping a full academic load. There is time to do it all.

  5. Can non-music majors be in the bands?

  6. Anyone can be in the bands at Kutztown University. Around 80% of the band is made up of non-majors. Music majors are required to be in one large ensemble each semester and the Marching Unit will count towards this requirement.

  7. How do I enroll in the bands?

  8. Register for the appropriate band at registration or during add and drop. If you enroll for credit, you will receive a grade for "1" hour of credit. Many students participate in the Marching Unit in the fall semester and Concert Band in the spring semester. The Department of Bands is committed to providing a musical opportunity for every interested KU student.

  9. How do I audition for the Marching Unit?

  10. Inclusion in the Marching Unit is dependent upon attendance at the weeklong summer band camp, which typically starts two weeks before classes begin. Everyone present at band camp will take part in the Marching Unit show. Please fill out this form to receive information on Band Camp. Contact us as soon as possible to be placed on our mailing list for all future information you will need! Band Camp concludes with an exhibition in the stadium. Parents and friends are welcome to attend, and a FREE lunch is served.

  17. Do I have to audition to be on the Drumline?

  18. During the preview day and at marching band camp, each percussionist will audition. The Drumline instructor will place each person on the instrument(s) that they are best at playing. You will be sent a percussion warm-up sheet you should prepare for the fall audition.
