The fundamental purpose of Jazz Studies is to provide students the opportunity to perform in quality jazz organizations such as jazz ensembles, combos, rehearsal bands, and vocal jazz groups. The student may supplement her/his educational experience by taking one of the several jazz related courses offered at Kutztown University such as improvisation, jazz history, music in film, and others. The student may also create his/her own course of study, working individually with a professor through
independent study.
By participating in Jazz Studies in a performing capacity, the student who aspires to be a professional player will perform in an atmosphere with similar responsibilities as the working professional. In the various rehearsal and performance settings, the student will be exposed to many different techniques and concepts, choosing those that will help define a professional career.
Jazz Studies demands certain quality standards from its students, no matter their beginning level. It is through this high quality performance standard that the students learn to judge musical value and eventually apply what they
have learned.

Jazz Studies represents a vital part of the university as a whole. The ensembles and classes offered as part of Jazz Studies are open to all students, regardless of major. Performance standards are such that future musicians/educators/listeners establish attitudes toward music and performance that will be of critical importance in their musical and cultural endeavors. Jazz Studies at Kutztown University is designed with the hope of perpetuating an art form both unique and indigenous to the American people.
