Whether you're interested in performing, composing, arranging, music publishing, conducting, college teaching, or certification to teach general, instrumental, and choral music in K-12, the study of music at Kutztown University will prepare you to succeed.  With a dual degree in music and a related field (psychology, electronic media, theatre or business are common options), you'll have even more career opportunities.

The Department has 16 full-time and 13 part-time faculty and offers performance experiences in large organizations as well as small ensembles. The performing groups service the university community by providing music for concerts, recitals, and special university events. The Department of Music in cooperation with the Department of Speech & Theatre presents a musical theatre production annually.

Old Main, which houses many of the music activities, includes state-of-the-art practice facilities, an electronics lab featuring up-to-the-minute technology, a brand new digital recording studio, and an extensive collection of percussion instruments.  Old Main also features the Georgian Room, an exquisite mid-19th century recital facility with a Steinway concert grand piano that is one of the finest in the nation.  Across the street from Old Main is Schaeffer Auditorium, a beautiful turn-of-the-century building where the Department of Music presents large ensemble concerts as well as chamber ensemble recitals.

B.A. in Music

Your Education
As a Music major, you'll get the best of both worlds: a foundation in the liberal arts and plenty of personalized education in music.  In your basic music courses you'll study music literature, harmony and theory, sight singing, ear training, composition and arranging, and instrumental and vocal conducting, as well as taking a professional seminar in music.  You can select from subjects like Experiencing Contemporary Music, Music from Ancient Time to 1825, Electronic Music Composition, Aesthetics and Music Criticism, Jazz History and Influences, Women in Music, and many more. (See our Curriculum page) As part of your general education you'll also study literature, modern languages, philosophy, psychology, history, sociology, geography, the natural sciences and mathematics.

Special Learning Opportunities
As a student in the Department of Music, your hand-on experience starts immediately. You can study privately with a professor who specializes in teaching your instrument or voice. You can become part of one or more of the 15 performing organizations including choir, jazz ensemble, marching band, orchestra, and wind ensemble.  You will also have opportunities to perform in student recitals and participate in the many workshops and master classes given by world-renowned musicians and educators sponsored by the Department.

B.S. in Music Education

Your Education
You will receive a broad educational foundation, a comprehensive experience in music, and the methods and techniques courses you need for certification.  You will be taught and mentored by music faculty who are professional performing musicians, guest conductors, and workshop leaders in the the field of music education.
As part of the preparation leading to the B.S. degree, you will study harmony and theory, aural skills, music history, conducting, music technology, and more.  You will take private lessons each semester in your major performing area, perform on student recitals, and present a senior recital.  In fact, you take the same courses in music as students in the B.A. music degree program, then continue with a series of techniques and methods courses to complete your professional training.

Special Learning Opportunities
Your professional education training includes techniques courses for strings, woodwinds, brass, and percussion.  You will develop both breath and depth in teacher education through a sequential series of methods courses in the areas of elementary, secondary, choral, and instrumental.  These courses also involve fieldwork, so your opportunity to observe music education in the schools begins early in your training.  As a music education major, you will study both choral and instrumental conducting, and are guaranteed podium time in front of the large performing ensembles.  In your senior year, you will spend a semester student teaching.
