The Dorothy S. Barbera String Scholarship was established by Aceste J. Barbera, professor emeritus of music, in loving memory of his wife, to provide scholarship assistance to accomplished string instrumentalist students. Preference is given to students studying violin. The student will be selected by May 1 each year by the Chair of the Music Department in consultation with the string faculty and awarded by the Director of Financial Aid in accordance with policies of the Scholarship Committee. Two awards of up to $1,000 annually.
Kappa Kappa Psi - Zeta Mu Music Scholarship Established by the Zeta Mu Chapter of Kappa Kappa Psi National Honorary Band Fraternity to provide assistance to students that display outstanding musical achievement. One scholarship will be funded by an annual gift of $600 (to be split over two semesters). To be eligible, the student must be enrolled in an instrumental instruction class for both fall and spring semester and participate in at least one Kutztown University performing ensemble. The student must have achieved a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5. By April 15 of each year, the student will be selected by the Music Department, through the audition and application process. The scholarship will be awarded by the Director of Financial Aid.
The Reid F. Lessig Scholarship of Bands This scholarship was created in 1994 in remembrance of Reid F. Lessig, instructor, drill designer and band front coordinator of the KU Band program from 1972-1982. Reid also founded the Graduate Organization of Bands which has continued to support the band programs at Kutztown University for more than twenty years.
Awards are presented at the annual Spring Concert Band performance. The
Scholarship Committee reserves the right to not award scholarships during any given school year.
Awards of up to $300 annually. Participation in at least one of the following is required:
Established in memory of Earl "Jim" Mayberry, a dedicated professor of music (1967-1984), by family and friends to recognize exemplary commitment and accomplishment by a student majoring in music or music education. The recipient will be a student majoring in music or music education who has completed at least 12 but no more than 20 credits. Preference will be given to a student majoring in trombone. The student will be selected by the Chair of the Music Department by April 15 of each year, and the scholarship will be awarded by the Director of Financial Aid. One $500 award will be made annually.
The Edwin Schatkowski Music Scholarship This scholarship has been made possible through the generosity of the Schatkowski family, who has created an endowed scholarship in recognition of Dr. Schatkowski's years of service and leadership to Kutztown University as a music faculty member. Selection is based on music performance. It is up to the music faculty to make the selection for one $500 award annually.
The Esther F. Smith Piano Scholarship The Esther F. Smith Piano Scholarship was established by Samuel P. Smith '43 (former President of the Kutztown University Foundation) in memory of his mother, Esther F. Smith '13, to provide an annual scholarship to a worthy student majoring in music. Preference is given to students studying piano. One $750 award may be made annually.
The Rudolf and Flora M. Wertime Music Scholarship The Wertime Music Fund was established in 1988 by Selma Wertime Thomson, Professor Emeritus of Music, in honor of her parents. Rudolf Wertime was a concert pianist and chair of the Music Department at Wilson College. Proceeds from the fund are to be used for music scholarships to be given to students who demonstrate exceptional aptitude and potential for growth in musicianship. The Music Department is grateful to Professor Thomson for the establishment of the fund.Scholarships have been established and may be renewed based on annual reviews of the recipients performance. The selection committee reserves the right not to award all scholarships. Persons considered for the Rudolf & Flora Wertime Music Scholarship do not need to be a B.A. Music Major, B.F.A. Related Arts or even a Music Minor. All majors within the University programs of study will be considered. Awards will be announced during the spring semester. Candidates may be requested to interview or audition for the selection committee. Awards of up to $300 each annually.
The R.G. Wells Jazz Band Scholarship The R.G. Wells Jazz Band Scholarship was established by Richard G. Wells, former director of the Kutztown University Jazz Band to provide scholarship support for members of the Kutztown University Jazz Band through awards of up to $500 each annually. To be eligible, the student must be a sophomore or junior current member of the Kutztown University Jazz Band, show performing and soloistic skills on his/her instrument/s, maintain a good academic record, and show leadership qualities. The student will be selected by April 15 each year through a process determined by the Chair of the Department of Music and the Jazz Band Director in consultation with the Graduate Organization of Bands and interested music emeriti faculty. The scholarship will be awarded through the Office of Financial Aid. |
