PHYSICS PROGRAM

Kutztown University - Department of Physical Sciences

Welcome to the Physics Home Page. The Physics Program is one of several within the Department of Physical Sciences.

PHYSICS AS A CAREER

A wide variety of courses in physics is currently being offered at Kutztown University. Most of these courses are designed for students concentrating in physics. Three different degree programs are available for persons interested in pursuing a career in physics or a related field.

There are three main career paths for a physics bachelor to follow: graduate study in physics or astronomy, graduate study in fields other than physics such as engineering, and employment. How are physics bachelors employed? They are employed in research, development, design, programing (scientific and engineering), technical writing, and many other areas. Many physics majors are employed as engineers or research assistants, and some physics graduates choose a career in secondary education.

A student studying physics at Kutztown University can expect to receive a good preparation for a variety of possible careers in physics and related fields. Graduates of the program have sucessfully pursued graduate study in physics, engineering and other fields.

PROGRAMS OF STUDY

The B.S. in Physics is intended for persons planning to pursue a career in physics or to continue with graduate study in physics or a related field. A student in this program must complete a total of at least 45 semester hours of course work in physics and at least 27 semester hours in concomitant sciences (mathematics, chemistry and biology). In addition there are General Education requirements which include courses in the social sciences and humanities, as well as in the development of basic skills in writing and oral communication. A wide variety of electives are available, and most students in this program complete more than the required minimum of courses in their major area of study.

The
B.S. in Secondary Education in Physics or Physics and Mathematics (combined program) or General Science/Physics is intended for persons planning to teach physics or physics and mathematics in secondary schools. A student in these programs must complete a total of 61-64 semester hours of course work in physics, mathematics, chemistry, and biology. In addition to the General Education requirements, 37 semester hours are also required in professional education and psychology courses. These include a one-semester full-time student teaching course.

A student may also choose a minor program in physics in association with any other major degree program by taking 20 s.h. of physics courses.

In addition to these programs of study, Kutztown University offers a transfer program in Engineering in cooperation with Pennsylvania State University.

The department also offers graduate courses in physics intended primarily to serve the interests of high school teachers. For additional information, please contact the Department of Physical Sciences.

The department has an active chapter of the Society of Physics Students. Student research projects in association with faculty members and attendance at local scientific meetings is highly encouraged.
