Gowland who joined us from The Birmingham School of Speech and Drama (now The Birmingham School of Acting ) in the UK. ....ed.]


Andrew Gowland in 'The Sea'During his time at Allerton Grange School in Leeds, England from 1991 to 2000 Andrew Gowland played many contrasting roles in musicals, from Seymour in Little Shop of Horrors to the Emcee in Cabaret and Macheath in the Threepenny Opera. He also acted in a number of plays, including taking the title role in Bertholt Brecht’s Mother Courage and Her Children and Stuart in Alan Ayckbourne’s Gosforth’s Fete. He also acquired 9 GCSEs and 4 A levels including Theatre Studies and Technical Theatre Arts and Media Studies.

 Taking a year away from structured education, he traveled through Australia, Japan and SE Asia including Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore.

Andrew Gowland with Simon TurnerIn 2001 Andrew began his formal training as an actor at The Birmingham School of Speech and Drama (now The Birmingham School of Acting ) in the UK. During his Second year of actor training Andrew was encouraged to develop his singing voice and gained a place on the Musical Theatre pathway of the acting course at BSSD. That same year he was chosen to represent the School in the United States as a guest pupil at Kutztown University. Whilst training there Andrew auditioned successfully to play the role of Neville in the musical, The Mystery of Edwin Drood directed by Michael Kirkland.

Whilst studying in the USA Andrew spent three months under the instruction of Professor Roxane Rix in Alba Emoting: a revolutionary technique for the release of emotion whilst acting. Roxane is one of only a very small handful of qualified tutors of the technique worldwide and Andrew is hoping to become one of the first UK based practitioners.

Andrew graduated from BSSD in 2003 with BAHons in Acting and Musical Theatre. During his graduating year he Andrew Gowland with Connor Brownwas cast as The Ward in Thomas Middleton’s Women Beware Women, adapted by Howard Barker and directed by Richard Hurst at the Birmingham Hippodrome. Also at the Hippodrome, Andrew was The Baker in Stephen Sondheim’s Into the Woods directed by Paul Kerryson. In the production of The Sea directed by Ruth Carney and Stephen Little at the Crescent Theatre Birmingham, Andrew played the role of Hollarcut. Since graduating he has continued his training by working with singing teachers such as Ross Campbell (who teaches at the Royal Academy of Music in London) and Gillyanne Kayes, author of ‘Singing and the Actor’.

Recently Andrew returned from a contract as a member of the Oriana Theatre Company on board P&O’s flagship Oriana during her cruises around S.America and the Caribbean. Included in the many and varied roles Andrew played during this contract was Young Elvis Andrew Gowland in 'Women Beware Womenin the musical Elvis directed by Carole Todd and the Emcee in Red Hot and Fosse directed by David Morgan. He juggled with fire (Poi) during Mardi Gras, again directed by David Morgan. During this contract for Paul Elliot and Chris Moreno’s company CMC Ltd, Andrew also worked with choreographers Brian Rogers and Roger Hannah and musical directors Chris Hatt and Anthony England.

Most recently Andrew understudied Jonathan D Ellis as Miguel in the original London cast of Murderous Instincts at the Savoy Theatre in the West End, directed by Michael Rooney. He was originally cast for Murderous Instincts by Anne Vosser for the very first UK production under the direction of Olivier Award Winning Director Bob Carlton. Bob originated the production at the Norwich Theatre Royal before its move to the Savoy.

Whilst not acting, Andrew has taught on both sides of the Atlantic! In 2002, whilst assisting Dr Michael Andrew Gowland in 'The Sea'Kirkland at Kutztown University with his undergraduate Stage Combat classes, Andrew was invited to be a guest tutor in Rapier and Dagger for the Stage at The Actors Outlet Drama School. More recently he has held Audition TechniqueWorkshops at the School. Other teaching experience includes ShakespeareComprehension for GCSE students and Stage Craft for GCSE and A Level students. He has also lectured.
