Professor Shaton earned her B.A in English from Kutztown State College
in 1971 (!). While at KSC, she participated in Readers Theatre and also
appeared in several mainstage productions. She took her M.A. in
Rhetoric and Communication from Temple University, where she
completed course work for a doctorate. At Temple, Prof. Shaton had the
opportunity to work with the university Debate team, thus reconnecting
her with an activity in which she participated while in high school.
Debate has been a large part of her academic life ever since. At Kutztown University, Prof. Shaton teaches Fundamentals of Speech
Communication, Argumentation and Debate, and Voice and Diction.
She is active in Learning Communities ( especially Act 101) , the Advising Center, and Association of Pennsylvania State College and University Facultys as one of the department’s representatives.
Complementing her work at Kutztown University is her volunteer work
with the Adult Literacy Center of the Lehigh Valley where she is a
reading tutor.
The other half of Prof. Shaton’s life is taken up by music and cats. She
sings with the Choral Union of Lehigh University, the Cathedral Choral
Society of Bethlehem, and is a member of the Cancel Choir of St. John’s
Evangelical Lutheran Church of Allentown. For the last 10+ years, she has been a volunteer with Musikfest, a festival of the arts held every August in Bethlehem, PA. She is also a pianist. And has 7 cats.
