The staff of the Advising Center for
Undeclared Students has created this page to provide KU
faculty advisors with information about academic advising
and a quick reference for frequently used online resources.
Advising at KU
First-year and transfer students at KU
meet with faculty during the
CONNECTIONS program to learn about university and
departmental requirements and to select courses for their
first semester. These students are subsequently
assigned a specific faculty advisor in their major.
Undeclared students are assigned to the faculty in the
Advising Center for Undeclared Students.
Faculty advisors can access a roster of assigned advisees
through
Profs Online or the
KU Database. Additionally, just prior to the
pre-advisement period each semester, a paper roster is sent
out to faculty advisors.
While practices and procedures for pre-advisement vary from
college to college and even department to department, there
are several tools and resources that every faculty advisor
should become familiar with to effectively advise students
at KU.
Check Sheets- Check
sheets provide an outline of required courses for
specific majors and minors. An understanding of
version
numbers and the
linkage between version numbers and
student records is necessary to accurately utilize check
sheets in the advisement process. Check sheets are
available in the academic departments.
Undergraduate Catalog- The
Undergraduate Catalog which can be accessed
online, is a publication describing academic programs,
degree requirements, courses, student services, general
regulations, requirements, and procedures.
The Key- The Key is the Student
Handbook at KU. It outlines important resources at KU,
as well as policies and procedures of the university.
The Key is available online in a PDF format.
Applicable Courses in General Education by
College & Degree- This document provides
specific information about General Education courses and
their applicability to specific majors. Copies of the
Applicable Courses in General Education by College
& Degree are available in the academic departments.
Master Schedule- The Master
Schedule is printed three times each year and lists
the courses offered in the upcoming semester/summer
session. In additional to listing course offerings, the
Master Schedule contains the Academic Calendar
for the semester as well as a list of
controlled
courses. The Master Schedule is generally
available in the academic departments prior to the
pre-advisement period each semester.
The Master Schedule can also be accessed online.
Academic Calendar- The Academic Calendar
is printed as part of the Master Schedule and provides a
list of important dates, including deadlines for
withdrawal, dates of course registration, and
holiday/recesses.
The Academic Calendar can be accessed online.
KU Database and Profs Online- Faculty Advisors
access advisee records through the KU Database and/or
Profs Online. Specific information on using these
resources in the advisement process is available through
the
Registrar’s Office.
Academic Progress Requirements for Financial Aid-
All students who are receiving Financial Aid must
satisfy academic progress requirements.

Major Discovery Series (What Can I Do With a Major
In?) - The

Development Center outlines career opportunities
associated with KU majors. Students with specific
questions regarding career opportunities and students
who are considering a change of major should contact the
Career Development Center directly at

The
Advising Relationship
Advising is an essential part of a
successful college experience. In the advising
relationship, both the student and the advisor contribute to
its success through collaboration, mutual respect, and focus
on the task of achieving educational goals. Advisors
possess knowledge about courses, programs and resources at
KU and can help students examine interests, needs, and short
and long range goals related to their educational
objectives.
Advising is an active and collaborative
process that requires an investment of time and energy on
the part of both the advisor and the student. The
potential personal and professional benefits are great when
this partnership is successful.
The following articles and resources provide suggestions and
ideas that may help you develop effective, collaborative,
successful partnership with your advisees.
