THE KUTZTOWN UNIVERSITY VALLADOLID PROGRAM IN SPAIN

This program is an intensive five week (6 credit hour) study of Spanish language and culture at the Universidad de Valladolid, in Valladolid, Spain

WHY STUDY ABROAD?

Studying the Spanish language and culture while living in Spain will increase your fluency in Spanish and your understanding of Spanish culture, and will offer insight into your own native culture and identity.  You can earn up to 6 semester hours of KU credit.

An intensive international study experience like the Valladolid Program will provide you with language skills and multicultural experiences that are beneficial in today’s job market.  Spanish is spoken by approximately 390 million people in the world.  In the U.S., the Hispanic population is the fastest growing minority population, numbering about 30.6 million.

Study abroad is not only an academic endeavor:  it is a truly life-changing experience!  ˇVamos a Valladolid!

VALLADOLID, SPAIN

Located in the heart of Spain (just a two-hour drive from Madrid, Spain’s capital), Valladolid offers an intriguing cultural mix.  This modern city, complete with active cultural programs, also maintains historical national treasures.  During the Renaissance, the Spanish court resided in Valladolid.  The Cathedral is known for the art of Alberto Churriguera and Juan de Herrera, also the architect for Philip II’s famous royal palace, El Escorial.

THE UNIVERSITY OF VALLADOLID

The Universidad de Valladolid boasts a long history of education dating to 1293.  Over the centuries, UV has continued to prosper and now offers 63 degrees from 4 main campuses located throughout Spain.  The University’s dedication to international programs is evident in its world-wide connections with foreign institutions.  Since UV has been offering Spanish language and culture courses for international students since 1949, they offer a program that understands and fulfills the needs of the foreign student.  The instructors, many of whom have doctoral degrees, are highly trained and routinely participate in continuing education and pedagogical programs.  Small group classes facilitate individualized attention and practice.  Language courses are taught at the newly constructed Center for Languages and Continuing Education, which has been equipped with the latest technological support for second-language acquisition.

In addition to the courses, there are extra-curricular activities:  gymnasium facilities, a film series, and music concerts.  “Intercambios”, or language exchanges, are also arranged between KU and UV students.

PROGRAM FORMAT

The KU/Valladolid program runs for five weeks.  Classes are offered Monday-Friday, for four hours per day.  Plan to arrive at least one day prior to the beginning of classes.

Students can earn up to 6 semester hours of credit for a variety of courses that are offered, including:  Intensive Spanish Language and Culture (Intermediate and Advanced levels), Intermediate and Advanced Conversation, and Spanish History and Art.  Exact course correlation will be discussed during information sessions.  Students receive transfer credits; there are no Incompletes.

ACCOMMODATIONS

Living with a Spanish family is an important part of the Valladolid Program.  The home-stay experience provides an informal and non-academic setting for language and cultural learning.  Students receive room and board from families who have been carefully screened by the UV administration.

EXCURSIONS

Three excursions are included in the program:  Salamanca; Segovia and the La Granja palace; Ávila and the El Escorial palace.  Touring these historic sites with a guide is an invaluable experience.
