Chinese Characters on Mac Computers:

PC XP, Vista, Windows 7

Chinese Characters on PC Computers:

The PC computers in DF 107 & 109 have both the Simplified Chinese and Traditional Chinese language input files installed. Students may change the input language to Chinese by changing the input language in the language toolbar according to the following instructions:toolbar 1

Step 1: Open the language bar. (Click on the small EN in the bottom toolbar. Choose "Show the Language bar" from the menu).

Step 2: Select Chinese (PRC).

toolbar 2Step 3. Select Chinese Simplified.

Step 4: Open a program such as Microsoft Word to start writing in Chinese.

Step 5: Type in the roman pinyin characters. A character bar will appear to allow you to select the appropriate symbol for the pinyin that you entered (as more than one character matches the pinyin).

For further illustrations of how this works with a PC, see http://newton.uor.edu/Departments&Programs/AsianStudiesDept/Language/chinese_write.htm.
