Biography:
Donna Sabella holds degrees in Portuguese, English/ESL, and nursing and has lived and studied in Brazil. Currently she is a doctoral candidate at the University of Pennsylvania in the Graduate School of Education's Educational Linguistics/Language in Education division. Her dissertation examines the narratives of women involved in prostitution and the therapeutic implications of those narratives for those involved in treating prostituted women.
Donna is a mental health nurse who, in addition to her teaching at KU, is a founding member and program director for Dawn's Place, a residential recovery program for prostituted and trafficked women in Philadelphia, for which she also designed the treatment program. She serves on the board of Dawn's Place as well as on the Chester County Mental Health/Mental Retardation board and PennTESOL-East, the organization for English as a second language professionals. She is also a member of the Philadelphia Anti-Trafficking Coalition.
Her areas of interest include mental health, women's issues, social justice, narratives, communication and the use of language in educational, healthcare and therapeutic settings.
