ARU 556 TEACHING ART AND LITERACY THROUGH PICTURE BOOKS
July 28 – August 1, 2014
This institute will emphasize the development and preparation of integrated lessons that teach art through picture books. Participants will investigate the fascinating world of Picture Books and discover novel creative teaching strategies for teaching art through popular, contemporary, postmodern and classic picture books in Pre-K - 8 educational settings. These approaches will highlight picture book integration as a vehicle in which to teach 21st century skills and the Common Core State Standards. This institute will include a field trip to a local museum as well as a visit from a special guest author.
STUDY INSTITUTE PROGRAM
The institute is designed to offer one week of encounters with art and picture books, group activities and discussions, hands-on learning and individualized instruction. The institute will meet 8:30 am to 5:00 pm Monday through Friday, July 28 – August 1 in room 114 in the Sharadin Arts Building. Class enrollment is limited to 15 students. Limited enrollment for ACT 48 non-credit students.
Dr. Julia Hovanec is an Assistant Professor of Art Education who has over twenty-five years of experience teaching art and art education. She has taught elementary and middle school art in The School District of the City of York and currently inspires undergraduate, graduate, general education and education students at Kutztown. Dr. Hovanec has presented at conferences at the local, state and national level as well as facilitated many professional development workshops and seminars in Pennsylvania on various topics ranging from picture books integration to assessment in art education. She earned her PhD in Education through Capella University in 2011. Her research involved pre-service art teachers, professional identity and reflective practice. Recently, Dr. Hovanec chaired a conference entitled: The Book: Image, Text & Tales.

Students are encouraged to room on campus, in handicapped-accessible facilities, so they benefit from interaction with colleagues. Room fee includes housing in Golden Bear South Village and linens (2 sheets, 2 towels, 1 washcloth and a pillow).
