The Art Education Certification Program is a Professional Program, which requires that you meet a range of standards set by the Pennsylvania Department of Education, the Art Education Department, and Kutztown University. Our programs are accredited by NASAD (National Association of Schools of Art and Design) , and the National Association of Schools of Art and Design and NCATE (National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education). It does not result in a degree but in a Pennsylvania Level I Teaching Certificate to teach Art K-12.

ALL STUDENTS – SIGN UP FOR THE ART EDUCATION LIST SERVE
CLEARANCES: The Pennsylvania State Police Request for Criminal Records Check (ACT 34), Federal Criminal History Record (Fingerprinting, ACT 114) and Child Abuse History Check (ACT 151) are prerequisites for ARU 110, ARU 210, ARU 310, ARU 301, and ARU 390/391.
Your ACT 34, ACT 114 and ACT 151 applications should list you as the receiver of the original form and a COPY of your ACT 34, ACT 114 and ACT 151 should be given to the Art Education and Crafts faculty member teaching the course on the first day of your class. You MUST print your receipt and request the paper copy of the Federal Criminal History Record when you register, this is the copy you will need to give to your professor. This is the only opportunity you will have to obtain a paper copy, the office may NOT print a copy for you.
Clearances are valid as long as you remain a matriculated student unless you change programs. Information on how to apply for these clearances can be found under the KU & Beyond section above
TASKSTREAM: You will be required to maintain an electronic portfolio. This can be obtained through the TaskStream website. Students should purchase a six year subscription to the service to carry then into your application for professional positions.
PRAXIS TESTS: You will be required to take two PRAXIS tests. The PRAXIS II tests (Art Content and Fundamental Subjects) must be taken and your scores recorded at Kutztown prior to your Clinical Experience semester. Sign-up information is available through the PRAXIS website.
ADVISORS: You will be assigned an advisor when you enter into the program. Should a faculty member not be available for a semester, you will be assigned a temporary academic advisor.
OBSERVATION HOURS: You will need to complete 30 observation hours for your program. These hours are built into the Art Education methods classes (ARU 401 & 420). If you have a Professor in EDU 100 who requires observations for their class, inform them that you are an Art Education student.
EARLY FIELD EXPERIENCE: In the Early Field class you will spend one day (Thursday) with a co-operating teacher and a class session on Tuesday (9-11). All students must sign up for Early Field in the semester prior to taking the class. It is important that you attend that meeting. Dates are listed in the above calendar.
CLINICAL FIELD EXPERIENCE: All students must sign up for Clinical Field Experience two semesters prior to placement. Check List Serve and the above calendar for dates and times. In this course you will be placed in two separate educational setting, where you will teach along side of a co-operative teacher. This is an intensive experience designed to replicate professional experiences.
SPECIAL OPPORTUNITIES
GRAD-PLUS-CERT: Certification students can work toward an M.Ed. in Art Education as they work through the certification process. Although each program of study is unique, the Grad-Plus-Cert Check Sheet is useful for considering this option. Students who wish to add the Masters onto their program must complete a Graduate Application Form and submit it to the College of Graduate Studies.
