Interviewing Tips
Preparing for that big interview can be more than a little intimidating. Follow the next few tips before, during and after the interview to boost your chances.
BEFORE:
- Prepare, Prepare, Prepare! — Do research ahead of time to find out exactly what the company you’re interviewing with is all about! Look online for company histories and bios to learn more about those in charge, and figure out how you think you’d fit in their scheme. The more you know about the company, the better your chances in the long run.
- Rehearse! — Think about possible questions the interviewer may ask, and practice the answers you’ll give. Don’t memorize them, you don’t want to sound scripted, just get a general idea for what you’d say. Practicing in the mirror is a great tool.
DURING:
- Look professional — Unless you’re applying for a part time job at a retail or food store, dress the part! For business interviews, women should wear a dress jacket and skirt or slacks, and men should wear a suit and tie. Not only will this please the interviewers, it will give you confidence knowing you look the part.
- Relax! — The interviewer doesn’t only want to hear the right answers; they want to get to know your personality. Be yourself and keep breathing (don’t tense up!). If you’ve done the preparation, there’s nothing to worry about—you’ve done all that you can!
- Make Eye Contact — This is another way to show confidence. If eye contact makes you nervous look at the top of the interviewer’s nose, right between their eyes. Try it out ahead of time with your friends. A person can’t tell if you’re looking at their eyes or not if you stare right there, it’s a great substitute!
- Always Ask Questions — During almost every interview, the interviewer will ask the applicant what questions they have. Always have questions ready, whether it’s about the company, or about a current accounting topic.
AFTER:
- Follow-up — Write a formal thank you note in full-block style, thanking the interviewer for the interview. Not only is this a sign of politeness and professionalism, it will keep you in their minds. Many companies do numerous interviews; this will help you stand out!
- Don’t Stress — Nothing can make the time pass slower than thinking about the interview continuously. Don’t analyze the little things you may have done wrong, instead dwell on what you know you did well, Think of ways you can change problem areas for your next one. You can’t change the past, instead prepare for future opportunities!
Like all things, interviews get easier with practice. Don’t sweat it if you don’t hear back right away. The more you put yourself out there, the more likely you are to secure the job that’s right for you.
