As faculty advisor, I’d like to welcome you to the first e-newsletter of the Kutztown University Model United Nations Club! Whether you’re an existing or incumbent member, there are a lot of exciting changes going on with the club for fall 2009.
Before I get started, let me introduce myself for those of you who don’t know me. I started teaching in the Department of Political Science at Kutztown University in the fall of 2008. I obtained my B.A. from East Stroudsburg University in 2002 and my M.A. and Ph.D. from Binghamton University (SUNY) in 2005 and 2008 respectively. My specialties are in the politics of West¬ern Europe, political economy, and research methodology. This fall will mark the beginning of my first year as faculty advisor. Vision One of the important aspects of taking on the role of faculty advisor is to define my vision for the club. Model United Nations is an opportunity for interested students to come together to discuss issues that are affecting the world right now. Human rights abuses, famine and disease in developing countries, and economic problems are just some of the issues we all have a stake in. And, like most great ideas, solutions to these problems start with you, the university student! Having said this, it is in the common pursuit of diplomatic and successful solutions to the world’s problems that gives the United Nations and Model U.N. its purpose. But to reach these solutions, people – regardless if they are world leaders, politi¬cians, or college students – need to be versed in the issues, be able to articulate themselves, and negotiate and compromise with others. Given the importance of these skills, the club will spend a lot of time helping members cultivate these skills, which will be useful at conferences, internships, and future jobs and careers. It is in this regard that Model U.N. helps its mem¬bers learn to make a difference! With these ideas in mind, the club is moving in an exciting new direction. As I’ve stated above, the club is an opportunity for interested students to unite around a common purpose. And it is an organization run by students for students. Therefore, we envision the club expanding both in terms of membership and scope. There will be more opportunities for members to partici-pate through recruitment efforts, community involvement, roundtable discussions, and, of course, conference training and participation. We also will be hosting several social events dur¬ing the semester so members can get to know each other bet¬ter. Overall, our goal is to build a community of scholars. Fall 2009 will be an exciting time for the club, so I thank you for your interest and look forward to seeing you in August! |

| Introducing your Secretary [Amanda Weigle] | |
| Hi, my name is Amanda Weigle and I’m a sophomore here at KU. I’m working towards a dual major in Political Science and International Business and a minor in Economics. I’ve been involved in the Model UN club here on campus for two amazing semesters, and I was a delegate on my high school’s team. In addition to being the newly-elected secretary for the club, I am also co-Undersecretary General of Internal Affairs for KUMUNC, our high school conference. On campus, I am also involved in the Phi Sigma Pi National Honors Fraternity and the Ultimate Frisbee Team. I’m really excited for the upcoming year and can’t wait to help out the officer core, especially with member recruitment and retention. I really hope we get a lot of new faces and can’t wait to see you all next fall!! | |
