Kutztown University Policy 1990-204

Naming Of Buildings And Facilities

A. Purpose

To establish a policy for naming Kutztown University buildings.

B. Scope

Authority for naming University buildings and facilities is vested in the Council of Trustees. The President recommends to the Council the names of specific buildings.

C. Definition(s)

D. Policy & Procedure(s)

1. Academic buildings and facilities may be named on the basis of location or function, for a person or group, or in honor of historic events. The names of existing buildings may be modified by action of the University Trustees.

2. Non-academic buildings, rooms, and facilities may be named on the basis of: primary use; location; honoring a person or group; or in the case of athletic facilities. in recognition of the primary sports conducted therein.

3. It is the intent in the naming of buildings and facilities to consider names of individuals whose lives and work have exemplified values which appropriately represent Kutztown University. Normally, a building will be named in connection with the major gift or service to the University and in recognition of an individual who provides the gift and exemplifies the values which the University represents. Names recommended to, and accepted by, the President will be presented to the Council of Trustees for final approval.

4. A major gift in conjunction with naming a University facility must meet the following certain funding requirements.

a. A new structure or facilities requires the donor to provide a minimum of 30% of the cost of the project. Each major gift will be evaluated by the Vice President for Advancement, the University President, and the Council of Trustees.

b. Rooms, auditoriums, etc., within a new structure, will be valued on a square footage basis with additional consideration given to the degree of use and function. The funding requirements for naming these areas will be evaluated on an individual basis, i.e., high use, high visibility facilities may require more funding support.

c. Renovations of existing facilities will require the same funding requirements as new structures. Complete renovation of an existing named building would require the donor to provide a minimum of 30% of the total costs. The donors name could then be added to the existing name. (The building name would be hyphenated to contain both names.)

5. Names of buildings and facilities should be appropriately displayed.
