The 1st Annual Assessment Symposium

Best Practices and Challenges

The first symposium sought
to begin a conversation about assessment amongst members of the Kutztown
University campus community and other regional institutions of higher
education. The conference
included plenary addresses by Dr. Michael Kiphart, Vice President, Middle
States Commission on Higher Education - Assessment Overview and
Historical Perspective; Dr. Elizabeth Paul, Interim Provost and Vice
President for Academic Affairs, The College of New Jersey - Creating a
Culture of Assessment on Campus; and Dr. Donna Sundre, Executive
Director, Center for Assessment and Research Studies, James Madison
University - Building a Pathway for Institution-Wide Assessment; as
well as two panel discussion sessions.

Annual Assessment Symposium
April 19, 2008
The
second annual Kutztown University Assessment Symposium continued discussions
about assessment within the region, with many of the presentations
focusing on creating a culture of assessment. The agenda included plenary
addresses by Dr. Michael F. Middaugh, Assistant Vice President for
Institutional Research and Planning, University of Delaware and Vice Chair,
Executive Committee, Middle States Commission on Higher Education -
Accountability in Higher Education: Creating a Culture of Evidence for
Institutional Effectiveness and Dr. Patricia M. Dwyer, Associate Vice
President of Academic Affairs, College of Notre Dame of Maryland - We’re
not “one size fits all”: Creating a Culture of Assessment that Works for You,
and a series of afternoon workshops that focused on both academic and
administrative assessment topics hosted by Drs. Dwyer, Middaugh, and Oross.

The third annual Kutztown University Assessment
Symposium centered on the General Education curriculum and the assessment of
that curriculum. Dr. Brigitte
Valesey, Assistant Provost for Teaching, Learning, and Assessment at Widener
University, presented the keynote address –
General Education: What Does It Mean
. . . For Us? and a workshop –
Assessing General Education: What Do Students Learn?
In addition to the presentations, the conference included lunchtime
discussions of assessment topics and an afternoon poster session where seven
participants prepared poster presentations of their work on assessment.
