Golden Bear Debit Card

ATM access for Golden Bear Debit Cardholders - see below for information regarding ATM questions...

Refunds are not distributed or released on campus for overpayments on students accounts.  Read below to be sure you choose your refund preference.

Students NOW have a choice!  How do YOU want to receive your refund when they become available (refund issuance policy is still in effect)?

Use the 16 digits on the card you received to log into www.GoldenBearDebitCard.com.  There you will choose from three options.  Details on each option are below.  Even if you don't anticipate a refund, we encourage you to make a choice - you never know when you might be due a refund from overpayment.

  • Use of the declining balance Golden Bear Debit Card (GBDC)- This is NOT A CREDIT CARD!
  • Direct Deposit to your own personal checking or savings account
  • Paper check mailed home

Cards are not issued to students under the age of 18 OR students with an international permanent address.

New students are mailed cards about 1-2 weeks before the semester starts and only when the student is registered.  They are mailed to the home address.  Watch out for it!

For your protection GBDC's are NOT forwarded - all cards sent to an address with a forwarding order in place are returned to Higher One.  If this may have happened to you, or your address was wrong and not updated, you will need to update your address in MyKU and notify us that you have done so.  You can email Bursar@kutztown.edu.  Your third replacement request will result in a $15.00 fee on your MyKU account.  Please look out for this card and keep it in a safe place.

Refund Choices (see FAQ's below - you need the card even if you don't want to use it):

1. Deposit onto your Golden Bear Debit Card (OneAccount / GBDC / Easy Refund)- this is a declining balance debit card that has a Master Card logo for purchasing!  No fee for making purchases as a MC.

  • This is NOT a CREDIT CARD
  • Availability of Funds - same day issued
  • Notification Method - Email or Text Message
  • Higher One ATM's will be on campus for FREE withdrawals from the GBDC only - max per day is $500.00.
  • You can order checks for this account - do so now to pay landlords and other needed college expenses.

2. Deposit into the bank account of your choice - you will need to supply your bank account information when you choose this option.  You will still need the GBDC to log in and make your choice - hold onto the GBDC should you wish to activate it later.

  • Availability of Funds - 1-3 Business Days (depending on receiving bank)
  • Notification Method - Email or Text Message

3. Paper check mailed home - no pick up option available.

  • Availability of Funds - 5-7 Business Days (depending on postal service)
  • Notification Method - Email or Text Message

What do you do when you get the GBDC?

When the card arrives at home, you will need to log into www.GoldenBearDebitCard.com.  Enter the 16 digits on the front of the card and validate your identity as requested.  You will then be prompted to make a refund choice - note the choices below (they are also listed on the site).  You do not have to use the card itself.  Be sure to have your own bank account information handy if you are interested in the direct deposit option.  After you are done, you will receive an email confirming your selection.  You will need to log BACK into the site and confirm with that email.  At that time, you can choose your notification preference - such as mobile text or email.  You then wait for refunds to be issued.

Do you HAVE to wait for your refund to use the card?

If you chose the OneAccount - the Golden Bear Debit Card itself - NO!  You can deposit funds on that card and start using it today!  Remember it is a declining balance debit card that happens to have a MC logo for purchases - this is NOT a credit card. The card is only worth what you add to it or what is added to it from your refund.  Parents can add money to it as well - see that option on the website.  When making purchases if you use it as a debit card there will be a 0.50 per use charge, however if you use it like a MC, there is no fee to you at all from Higher One.

What does it mean by Fully Functioning Bank Account available?

If you chose the OneAccount - the Golden Bear Debit Card - you can order checks from the declining debit balance and use it as a fully functioning bank account including online bill pay options and more - for more information check out their site.  The bank account is FDIC insured!

Do I HAVE to use the Card?  I don't want another bank account or debit card.

No, you do NOT have to use the card - the digits on the card however are how you will access the GBDC website where you will choose your refund preference.  Your other options include direct deposit into your own bank account or a paper check to be mailed home to your perm address.  You NEED the card to log in and tell us HOW you want refunds - this is the only way to accomplish this - we cannot accept selections over the phone or by email or in person - only on the website indicated after validating your identity.
