  Disability Services - Additional Services

Academic Assistance

     Academic assistance is provided through the Academic Skills Lab, Math Lab, Peer Tutoring, and Supplemental Instruction.   Individualized study skills assessments are made and tutorial assistance is provided. Tutors are available to all students and arrangements are made at no cost to the student.

     Contact Beekey Education Center, Room 150.  The phone number is (610) 683-4208 or visit the Tutoring Services website.

     The Writing Center, sponsored by the English Department, is located in 132 Old Main Building. Students may call 610-683-4733 to make an appointment or stop in. Support is offered to writers in every discipline and at any stage of the writing process. Also, you can visit the Writing Center website.

Speech and Hearing Assessment

     Speech and hearing assessments are made through the Center for Communication Disorders, Old Main, Room 148. Speech therapy is also available. The telephone number is 610-683-4293.

Counseling and Psychological Services

     A full range of counseling and psychological services is provided through University Counseling Services. All counseling is confidential and is voluntary on the part of the student. Because of a commitment to the affirmation and promotion of diversity, USC invites students with an expectation of respectful and compassionate treatment The Department of Counseling and Psychological Services is located at 205 Stratton Administration Building. The telephone number is 610-683-4072.

Health and Wellness Center

     All students pay the Health and Wellness Center fee. The Center is open Monday-Friday from 8:00 a..m. until 8:00 p.m. during the fall and spring semesters. During summer sessions the Center is open Monday-Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. During winter break the hours are modified as posted. The clinic is staffed by experienced professional nurses. Physician and nurse practitioner appointments are available as needed. The telephone number is 610-683-4082.  The Center is accredited by the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care, Inc. (AAAHC).

Financial Aid

     Students with disabilities may apply for the same type of financial aid that is available to other students. Additionally, they may be eligible for assistance through their county Office of Vocational Rehabilitation or Bureau of Blindness and Visual Services. Financial Aid is located at 209 Stratton Administration Building. The telephone number is 610-683-4077.

Career Services

     The office of Career Services can help students in the exploration, definition and implementation of career goals.  Career Services offers a comprehensive array of programs and services such as personality, vocational and interest inventories, a well-stocked career library, individual consultation and College Central, a web-based resume/jobs database.  Whether students are deciding on a major, looking for a professional position, or considering a career change, Career Services will provide information and opportunities.  Students are encouraged to take advantage of this service throughout their KU experience.  Students are welcome to stop in and to browse through the resources.  Career Services is located a 113 Stratton Administration Building.  The telephone number is 610-683-4067. 

Library

     The Rohrbach Library staff is committed to assisting all students with their information needs.  For students with disabilities, the staff will retrieve library materials, photocopy articles, and assist with research. The telephone number for the library is 610-683-4480.

Parking

     Preferential parking spaces are available in each lot on campus for persons with disability (PWD)-designated license plates. A student who does not have a disability license plate but is temporarily disabled may contact Public Safety at the rear of Old Main Building at 610-683-4002 to obtain a medical parking space on a limited temporary basis.

Transportation

      Accessible shuttle buses run a continuous loop on campus with four stops: the McFarland Student Union Circle and the Main Street bus shelter.  There is also a Kutztown downtown loop with nine stops. Kutztown University has one van that is equipped with a wheelchair lift. This can be accessed in emergencies on a first-come, first-served basis. Plans for field trips or other university sponsored off-campus activities such as student organization trips need to be planned well in advance.  Student organizations must follow the procedures for SGA Accessible Van Transportation Registration.  For information, call Administrative Services (610) 683-4143.

Housing and Residential Life

     Six residence halls have rooms and lavatories accessible to and modified for students with disabilities. Some units have special accommodations for students with visual or hearing impairment.  Other "reasonable accommodations" are made as necessary. Residence Hall professional and student staff are sensitive to special needs. The staff of Physical Facilities is quick to respond to reasonable requests for modification of facilities or equipment. The Housing and Residence Life office is located in 106 Old Main and the telephone number is (610) 683-4027.

Safety - Escort Service

     Public Safety and Police Services provides an on-campus escort service 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, during Fall and Spring semesters.  The emergency phones can be used to request on-campus safety escorts. Simply pick up an emergency phone and push the button and a Public Safety and Police Services dispatcher will answer.  The phone number for Public Safety is (610) 683-4001.

 

The Multicultural Center

     The Multicultural Center assist the university with retention efforts, focusing on students of color, provides leadership training for students and serves the general community by providing a safe place for discussions on race relations and inclusiveness.  The Center also sponsors cultural programs throughout the year.  It houses a small collections of books and serves as a meeting place and study hall for student groups, as well as providing classroom space.  Visit the Multicultural Center(the John B. The Women's Center

     The Women's Center is a resource and referral Center for personal concerns and academic research as well as a meeting place for student groups including the Feminist Majority Leadership Alliance (FMLA) and Students Organizing Against Rape (SOAR).  The Women's Center works with community and national organizations and provides resources useful to women.  Located on the first floor of Old Main, The Center is strategically placed at the heart of the building's activities.  The phone number is 610-683-4655.

The GLBTQ Center

     The Gay, Lesbian, Bi-Affectionate, Transgendered, and Questioning (GLBTQ) Resource Center seeks to be the regional center for resources which create and support environments whereby the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender students, faculty, administrators, staff and alumni/ae have access, inclusion, recognition, equality and respect in all facets of higher education.  The Center is located in room 3 of Old Main and hours are 1:00-4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, subject to change on a semester basis.  Allies is also located in the GLBTQ Resource Center.  Call 484-646-4111 (ext. 64111) or email:  glbtqdirector@Kutztown.edu.
