Activities or accomplishments of note
Dr. Jeanie Burnett,
Department of Elementary Education, Dec. 15, 2008, facilitated a
grant from Organization Mondiale pour l’Education Pre’soclaire
(World Organization for Early Childhood Education) OMEP to Riverside
School, London, England. The grant will be used to extend special
projects that provide much needed physical activities such as
movement, dance, and inviting games for young children before,
during and after school. Riverside School has welcomed scholars from
Kutztown during KU-UK visits.
Dr. Marie-Aline Cadieux
and Dr. Maria Asteriadou, both of the Department of Music,
presented a recital of cello and piano works at Lebanon Valley
College, on Sept. 14, 2008, and at Kutztown University, on Sept. 15,
2008. The program included the rarely-heard Samuel Barber Sonata and
the Sonata by 19th century composer Agnes Zimmerman,
which Cadieux rediscovered, as it has been out of print and
unperformed for decades.
Dr. Sandra Chambers,
Department of Elementary Education, Summer 2008. A partnership model
for the Graduate Reading summer clinic was established over 30 years
ago with the Kutztown School District. This summer, through
Chambers’ leadership, the Summer Reading Clinic was expanded from
two to four sites. Under the supervision of Chambers and Dr. Mary
Ann O’Neil, 47 Kutztown University graduate reading candidates
worked for six weeks with a total of 240 students from Kutztown,
Wyomissing, Brandywine Heights, and Quakertown school districts. The
programs were well received by the participants and district
personnel.

Dr. John Conahan,
Department of Social Work, was elected to a third term as President
of the Board of Directors for the Gatehouse, an organization for the
treatment of drug and alcohol dependence. Conahan was also elected
to the Board of Directors of Fairview Counseling and Play Therapy
Center in Reading, Pa. The Gatehouse is a substance abuse treatment
organization with multiple locations that provides gender-separate,
long-term care to residents of central and southeastern
Pennsylvania.

Nominations and Elections Committee for the Northeastern Association
of Criminal Justice Sciences (NEACJS).

Frances C. Cortez Funk,
Health and Wellness Services, was voted in by the Board of Directors
from Centro Hispano Daniel Torres, Inc. as chairperson for the
2008-2009 fiscal year on Sept. 25, 2008. She has been actively
involved as a board member for a combination of four years. Centro
Hispano is a community-based organization that, through its
professional, linguistic and cultural skills, provides services to
the growing Latino community in the city of Reading and Berks
County, both directly and in cooperation with other community
service agencies and organizations.

evaluating HIV materials distributed to educators and used in
professional development, this joint initiative with the Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention focuses on improving health and
educational outcomes of young people.

beneficiaries include: Casa Guadalupe, Allentown Art Museum,
Reparatory Dance Theatre, and the City of Bethlehem.

Vivaldi concerts. She was the featured soloist in the J.S. Bach
“Concerto for Violin in a minor,” the Albinoni “Balletto No.
3 in G,” and the Bach “Brandenburg Concerto No. 2.”
