PROFESSIONAL CONFERENCES ATTENDED 

Dr. Bobbie Berry, Department of Elementary Education, June 17-21, 2008, attended the National Conference on Race and Ethnicity in Higher Education, Orlando, Fla. 

Dr. Richard S. Courtney, chair, Department of Geography, participated in the 2008 AAG Department Leadership Workshop held June 20-21, 2008 at the University of California, Los Angeles. The workshop is part of the Healthy Departments Initiative of the Association of American Geographers. 

Kent Dahlquist, Housing and Residential Services, attended the Alcohol Responsibility Conference from Sept., 23–25, 2008. 

Dr. William A. Dempsey, Dean of the College of Business, and Dr. David A. Haas, Interim Associate Dean, attended the Mid-Atlantic Association of Colleges of Business Administration’s Annual Conference in Washington, D.C., Oct. 12-14, 2008. 

Dr. William A. Dempsey, Dean of the College of Business, visited Slippery Rock University (SRU) in the role of the AACSB’s mentor to SRU concerning progress toward achieving AACSB accreditation, Oct. 1-2, 2008. 

Dr. Michael Downing, Department of English, attended the American Drama Conference at St. Francis College in Brooklyn, N.Y., Nov. 2008. The conference consisted of numerous panels and presentations which focused on American Playwrights like David Mamet, Tennessee Williams, August Wilson, Edward Albee, and Arthur Miller. It featured spirited discussion on issues of sexuality, race, and family dynamics in theater. Downing is teaching the graduate course Major 20th Century American Drama during the spring term. 

Dr. Rosemary Fliszar, Department of Nursing, attended a program entitled “The Path to Learning: Strategies to Energize Nurse Educators,” on Oct. 20, 2008, in Bethlehem, Pa. The program was sponsored by the Pennsylvania League for Nursing, Area 2, and awarded 2.5 contact hours.   

Dr. Janice Gasker, Department of Social Work, attended the annual conference of the Pennsylvania Association of Undergraduate Social Work Education, Philadelphia, Pa., on Oct. 30, 2008. 

Michelle Gober, Associate Director of Intercollegiate Athletic Services, attended the 2008 National Association of Collegiate Women’s Athletic Administrators (NACWAA) conference in Atlanta, Ga. from Oct. 11–14, 2008. 

Brenda Innocenti, Department of Communication Design, attended the One Club Conference for Educators of Creative Advertising in New York on July 16 and 17, 2008. The One Club is the premier national organization for advertising creative professionals. 

Dr. Mary Laub, Department of Elementary Education, June 19-21, 2008, attended the Keystone State Reading Association (KSRA) Leadership and Board of Directors Meeting in State College, Pa. As part of the proceedings, Laub attended workshops related to literacy.  In addition, as KSRA vice president and KSRA Conference 2009 chairperson, she reported on the 2009 conference plans. In her role as International Involvement Chairperson, she reported on the committee’s activities. 

Dr. Mary Laub, Department of Elementary Education, June 27-29, 2008, attended the International Reading Association Leadership Meeting in East Elmhurst, N.Y. Laub participated in workshops related to literacy conducted by noted reading researchers. 

Dr. Sharon C. Lyter, Department of Social Work, attended the Annual Program Meeting of the Council on Social Work Education, Philadelphia, Pa., held Oct. 29- Nov. 2, 2008. 

Dr. Robert N. Martin, Department of Geography, attended the 2008 ESRI Education Users Conference in San Diego, Calif., Aug. 2-5, 2008. 

Dr. Robert N. Martin, Department of Geography, attended the Pennsylvania Geographical Society Annual Meeting held at Clarion University, from Oct. 31-Nov. 1, 2008. 

Dr. Robert N. Martin, President of the PASSHE GIS Consortium, chaired the fall meeting of the consortium. The meeting was held in conjunction with the Pennsylvania Geographical Society at Clarion University on Oct. 31, 2008. 

James C. Matejik, Department of Nursing, attended a program entitled “Energizing Educators with Teaching Strategies for Long Term Memory and Clinical Teaching” on Oct. 20, 2008, in Bethlehem, Pa. The program was sponsored by the Pennsylvania League of Nursing, District 2, and awarded 2.5 contact hours.   

Dr. Phyllis Miller, Department of Elementary Education and Dr. Eloise Long, Department of Library Science and Instructional Technology, on July 14-18, 2008 attended the Level I Curriculum Audit Training in Indianapolis, Ind. This training is supported through the Phi Delta Kappa organization and Curriculum Management Systems, Inc. 

William F. Mioskie and Crystal Taylor, both of the Department of Public Safety & Police Services, attended the Pennsylvania Parking Association’s Annual Conference in Pittsburgh, Pa. from Sept. 24-26, 2008. 

William F. Mioskie, Department of Public Safety & Police Services, and Crystal Taylor, Department of Public Safety & Police Services, attended on Oct. 29, 2008, a Mass Notification Seminar at Thiel College presented by Cooper Notification.

Dr. Mary Ann O’Neil, attended PMSA State Conference 2008. 

Donna Sabella, Department of Nursing, attended PenTESOL-East Conference, Penn State Ogontz Conference on Nov. 1, 2008.  

Dr. Kim Shively, Department of Anthropology/Sociology, July 14-18, 2008, attended A Short Course on Text Analysis: Systematic Techniques for Analyzing Qualitative Data, organized by H. Russell Bernard, and supported by the National Science Foundation at Duke Marine Labs, Beaufort, N.C.

Gerald L. Silberman, Vice President for Administration & Finance, and William F. Mioskie, Chief of Police, Department of Public Safety & Police Services, attended on Oct. 22, 2008 a briefing by Congressman Dent on Emergency Preparedness for Colleges and Universities hosted at DeSales University.  

Dr. Terre Sychterz, Department of Elementary Education, Nov. 20 to 23, 2008, attended the National Council of Teachers of English 98th Annual Conference, San Antonio, Texas. 

Dr. Terre Sychterz, Department of Elementary Education, Oct. 4, 2008, attended the Diverse Literacies Conference: Teachers Teaching Teachers at Bear Creek Mountain Resort and Conference Center, Macungie, Pa. 

Dr. Pietro Toggia, Department of Criminal Justice, served as a panel chair: “Ethiopian Youth in the Diaspora: Challenges and Opportunities" in the Third Annual Tsehai Conferences at George Washington University, School of Law on June 28, 2008. 

Dr. John Vafeas, chair, Department of Social Work, attended the annual program meeting of the Council on Social Work Education, Philadelphia, Pa., held Oct. 29-31, 2008. 

Dr. John S. Walker, CFA, Department of Accounting and Finance on Oct. 31, 2008 attended The Northeastern Association of Business, Economics and Technology (NABET) conference in State College.
