Committee on Committees — December 7, 2006

1. Proposed Amendment to Article VI, Section B.

Motion: Members appointed by the Committee on Committees who are granted a leave of absence, sabbatical, or medial leave from the University exceeding 8 weeks, shall be replaced for the duration of their leave by the Committee on Committees and shall rejoin those committees on their return to the University for the remainder of their term. Where practical, the members granted a leave would suggest a replacement(s) for the committee(s) on which they serve from the appropriate constituency (i.e. department, college, administrative unit), but actual appointment to committees would remain the responsibility of the Committee on Committees.

Current wording:

Article VI Section B Item a: Members appointed by the Committee on Committees who go on leave, such as sabbatical or medical leave, shall be replaced for the remainder of their terms.

Rationale for change:

The current article has not been observed in practice and creates complications for making committee appointments due to the timing of those appointments and the listing of approved leaves and the uncertainty of medical leaves and other non-sabbatical leaves. It also seems to “punish” leave recipients who may be taking a one semester sabbatical leave, or a shorter leave, who may be serving a 3-year term on a committee. The wording is also vague as to the length of leave, but as written it would appear that any approved leave would remove the member from all committees.

Notes:

The terms “leave of absence” and “sick leave” are defined in the CBA. For leave of 8 weeks or less the committee member would be expected to find a replacement representative as per the by-laws of the various committees.

When a member of Senate is unable to attend a meeting for reasons acceptable to Senate, that person may designate another member of the constituency to act with the full rights and responsibilities of the original representative.

The proposed amendment only applies to committee members appointed by the Committee on Committees, not to those elected to committee memberships.

II. Events Advisory Council Committee

The Events Advisory Council would like to add the Director of Recreational Services to the committee. This person was previously a member of this committee as a representative from Athletics, but no longer reports to Athletics.

The current members of EAC are:
1. Director of Conference Services - Terry Sitler (Chairperson)
2. Assistant Provost - George Paterno
3. Rep. from Athletics - Michelle Gober
4. Rep. from Student Union Building - Kristina Christmas-Kunkle
5. Rep. from Schaeffer Auditorium - Greg Kokolus
6. Rep. from HARS - Christine Price
7. Student Rep. from ACE - TBA
8. Student Rep. from Student Government - Cait Bakke
9. Faculty member from Human Kinetics - Fred Garman
10. Faculty member from Visual & Performing Arts - Jeremy Justeson
