September 11, 2003
W. Bateman called the meeting to order in Room 223 of the Student Union
Building.

I. Announcements
After everyone in attendance introduced themselves, W. Bateman provided updates on the medical conditions
of Peg Speirs and Walt Nott. A moment of silence was held in remembrance of those who lost their lives on September 11, 2001, for
those who have lost their lives fighting for liberty since that time, and for those currently serving in the armed
services around the world.
D. Johnson reminded everyone about the Diversity Festival to be held September 28-30 and encouraged
everyone to attend the many events.
W. Bateman plugged the Presidential Scholarship Ball to be held on November 8 and encouraged Senate members
to get involved.
Posthumous degree for James T. Reedy - W. Bateman announced that subsequent to the May,
2003, Senate meeting, the Senate Executive Committee approved a posthumous degree for James T. Reedy which the
Senate Constitution allows under exigent circumstances.
II. Approval of the Agenda
J. Chaney moved, M. Perinchief seconded, to approve the Agenda. The motion passed.
III. Approval of the Minutes of May 1, 2003
M. DeCoster moved, G. Rothermel seconded, to approve the
Minutes of the May 1, 2003 meeting. The motion passed.
IV. Committee and Task Force Reports
A. Academic Technology Committee
David Haas, chairperson of the Academic Technology Committee, reported
on the recent activities of the committee. He further reported that a draft annex to the Academic Technology
Plan will be delivered to the Senate in the near future. He also indicated that committee would prefer
to make its report to the Senate at the end of the semester rather than the beginning.
B. General Education Restructuring Team
Debra Lynch, chairperson of the General Education Restructuring Team, reported that the committee has met
throughout the summer and continues to meet to deliberate the restructuring of general education. She further
reported that an expert on general education, Jerry Gaff, will be on campus
to meet with the committee and members of the University community on October 7 and 8. Open sessions with
faculty are scheduled for October 7 at 3:00 in the Alumni Auditorium and October 8 at 9:00 a.m. in the Blue
Room. Departments are encouraged to send at least one representative to each of the scheduled sessions.
C. Strategic Planning and Resources Committee
Edward Simpson, chairperson of the Strategic Planning and Resources Committee,
reported that the committee will meet in the near future and will be working on developing action plans.
D. Academic Standards and Policy Committee
W. Bateman reported that the committee will be meeting in the near future to develop a plus/minus grading
proposal.
V. New Business
A. Approval of Senate Meeting Dates for 2003-2204
R. Watrous moved, P. Dewey seconded, to approve the list of Senate meeting dates for the 2003-2004
academic year. The motion passed.
VI. Adjournment
M. DeCoster moved, M. Perinchief seconded, to adjourn the meeting. The motion passed.
The meeting was adjourned at 4:35 p.m.
