FMLA has its
origins in the Women's Awareness Group, which began in the
early 1970s. FMLA is a student organization funded by the Student
Government Association and directed by student officers through
the Kutztown University Women's Center.
The mission
of the group is to create an awareness of issues important to
women and men students while promoting the welfare of society as a whole.
Primarily an activist group, the students focus on issues such
as self-empowerment, gender equity, freedom of choice, domestic
violence and sexual abuse.
This group
sponsors the Vagina Monologues and the campus-wide "Take
Back the Night Rally and March" each spring and assists in
many Women's Center activities, including residence hall programs,
Women's History Month and Take Our Daughters To Work Day. Fund-raising
efforts supplement contributions to non-profit community organizations,
campus programming and conference leadership development opportunities.
The Women's
Action Group meets every Tuesday at 11 a.m. in the Women's Center,
126 Old Main. New members are always welcome.
