Additional Program Guidelines

Nursing

This program is limited to Registered Nurses who have completed a Nursing School Program or an Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN). Nursing students must submit an official transcript from their RN or ADN program and a copy of their RN license. Students applying for admission to the B.S.N. program must submit an official high school transcript or request that the Department of Education mail a copy of their GED earned high school equivalency form to the Admissions Office.

Communication Design

Communication Design majors in the College of Visual and Performing Arts are required to submit additional materials: freshmen must complete an art test and transfer students have a portfolio requirement. Upon receipt of the undergraduate application for admission, students will be sent the appropriate art test or portfolio requirements and guidelines with specific deadlines that must be met. Final deadline for the art test and portfolio submission is typically early February for fall admission.

For more information on the art test and admissions process for the Communication Design program, click here.

Studio Arts/Art Education/Crafts

Applicants to programs in Studio Art, Art Education, and Crafts are required to submit a portfolio. Portfolio requirements differ for each program, so applicants should check to make sure they receive the correct portfolio guidelines for their chosen program. Guidelines are sent to the applicant upon receipt of the undergraduate application of admission. The portfolio must be submitted no later than the deadline indicated on the guidelines form (early February in most cases).

Music

Music majors in the College of Visual and Performing Arts are required to complete and return a separate Department of Music admission form. Upon receipt of the undergraduate application for admission, students will be sent the music audition requirements/guidelines. Once the music admission form is returned (to be mailed directly to the Department of Music), the student will be scheduled for an audition with Department of Music faculty. At the interview/audition, students will play/sing in their area of musical interest and expertise. During the interview, students should be prepared to discuss their musical background, career goals, musical and general areas of interest. Students also take preliminary exams in: (a.) harmony and theory, (b.) ear training, and (c.) sight singing. These are diagnostic examinations to determine placement in music courses, and are considered as part of acceptance in the degree program. Students will not receive a decision regarding their acceptance to the university until the interview/audition/diagnostic examinations have been completed.

For more information on the audition and application process for the Music department, click here.

Theatre

Theatre majors in the College of Visual and Performing Arts are required to complete an audition. Upon receipt of the undergraduate application for admission, students will

be sent additional guidelines and requirements concerning the audition process.

Kutztown University welcomes applications from students who have been homeschooled.  Please review the guidelines under the freshmen/transfer sections, as well as the following information:

  1. Homeschooled applicants should submit a grade transcript if available and the official evaluation for each grade from 9 to 11. A final grade transcript (if applicable) and evaluation must be submitted when the final year of homeschooling is complete.
  2. All homeschooled applicants are required to submit at least one set of scores on the SAT Reasoning Test or the ACT.
  3. If an official high school diploma is not awarded by an agency, homeschooled applicants must submit a copy of the General Education Development Exam (GED) diploma and the GED scores from all five sections of the test. This information must be mailed directly from the Department of Education of the state issuing the diploma.
  4. Interviews for homeschooled applicants are not required, but they are strongly encouraged for students graduating when they are younger than 17 years old.

Notification of Acceptance and Confirmation Deposits

Kutztown University uses a rolling admissions process to review applications, which means that applications are reviewed and decisions made as soon as the application is complete and as long as space is available. Some areas of study at Kutztown University require additional steps before an offer of admission is made and may lengthen the notification time. Majors which involve additional steps are: Art Education and Crafts, Studio Art, Communication Design, Music, Music Education, and Theatre. In these instances, students will be notified as soon as a decision has been reached by the individual department.

Upon acceptance to Kutztown University, students must pay a non-refundable advanced registration deposit of $200 to secure their space in the class. Deposits for the fall semester are due by May 1. Deposits for the spring semester are due by December 15.

Campus Visits

Student guided campus tours are offered Monday through Friday at 10:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. Saturday morning tours are also available at 10:30 a.m. during the academic year and on selected summer dates. All 10:30 a.m. visits feature an information session by an admissions counselor followed by a student led tour of the university. Ten-Year Rule

Kutztown University welcomes the return to higher education of students who for various reasons did not complete their degrees. Such students should be aware that courses taken in their major discipline ten years or more prior to the resumption of study perhaps will not be counted toward graduation. Such courses may no longer be considered to be current or be required for the degree.

The Registrar determines the acceptability of these credits. However, students may request the re-evaluation of the Registrar’s decision by submitting a petition to the Undergraduate Exceptions Committee.

For more information, please see page 17 of the undergraduate catalog.
