Message
from the Director
Often when talking with alumni who haven’t been back to campus for awhile, I get lots of questions about the town itself...Is Shorty’s still there? How about Mark’s, the Quality Shoppe, Mr. Food, the Strand?
Well, there are some timeless constants, like Mr. Food, the Strand Theater and Mark’s; but there have been some changes as well. The original Shorty’s is now an oxygen bar (no foolin’) and the “bar” Shorty’s has moved to the basement of the Kutztown Tavern - a micro-brewery that was once the old Fenstamacher’s Hardware store. Kutztown still has a beautiful park on the east end of town. Renninger’s Farmer’s Market remains out on
Lyon's Road, and the used bookstore is still next to Sal’s pizza. But, you’ll find that the old Wayne’s Dry Goods Store is now the Jackie and Daughter florist shop and the Rustic has changed names too many times to count. For years now, the Feed and Read has been in the old Max’s grocery store location on Whiteoak. But DeTurk’s Hardware Store is still on Main Street with that charming, decorative tin ceiling.
When you think of your days at KU, let your thoughts drift to your visits downtown. Kutztown is a very special community, a community to which we owe a great deal as it has provided generations of friendships and memories.
Just for fun, let’s step off campus. I’ll bet even with the changes over the years you’ll still recognize the place.

Zaharati
Morfesis ‘85
Performing Goddess
“Sing
in me, Muse, and through me tell the story.....” Like
Homer, every artist, writer and performer requires a
source of inspiration. In her case, Zaharati Morfesis’ “Muse” speaks
ancient Greek! In 1999, Morfesis, a Kutztown University
Fine Arts graduate from the class of 1985, traveled to
Greece on a Rotary International Ambassadorial Scholarship,
where she taught art and studied goddess mythology in
Athens. Full story

Press
Release |
| General Colin L. Powell (Ret.), USA
General Colin L. Powell (Ret.), USA, will be back on Kutztown’s campus as the featured speaker for the 17th Annual Kutztown University Decision Makers Forum on March 30, 2006! The upcoming speech marks Gen. Powell’s second address at the Decision Makers Forum. Powell, a recent Secretary of State should attract even more attention from corporate sponsors, students and the general public this March. “He was an obvious choice,” says Ron Lewis, Development Director for the College of Business as well as the event’s chief organizer. Lewis, who received confirmation of Powell’s availability in June 2005, believes that Powell can offer a “unique perspective on current events for the Kutztown community since he was recently part of the President’s administration.”

Your University
What
is the KU Foundation?
The KU Foundation is a private corporation established as
the fund-raising agency of Kutztown University. The Foundation
was established in 1983 when the Kutztown College Foundation
and the George B. Hancher Endowment Fund were merged. This
merger brought all university fund-raising into one unified
effort. The Foundation status provides donors with the assurance
that their funds will be used only as they indicated and
that gifts cannot be controlled by the state. Foundation
resources are used to address University-identified needs.
