Message
from the Director
Ah! Spring! Morning song birds, the scent of flowers, shower
cleansed air – the season of promise and budding life.
Remember back to your springs on campus? Music drifting
out of open dorm windows, Frisbees and softball catch on the DMZ,
late evening strolls to Mr. Food. Sixty degrees was a relative
heat wave. Out came the flip-flops and shorts.
Springtime on a college campus is a wonderful time - at KU we
now enjoy the bubbling accent of the fountains in the Alumni Plaza.
The KU Golden Bear watches over students as they stroll
past the new Science Center on their way to the library or back
to their residence halls while Old Main chimes out the quarter
hour.
One of my favorite things about this time of the year is having
the 50th year class back for their reunion during spring commencement.
The 50th year classmates are energized by the excitement graduating
seniors exude and the students are inspired by the vitality of
those who had gone before them, fifty years ago, now returning
to their alma mater.
Years pass but some things about this season of the year are constant
and timeless. Students today still enjoy the same excitements
of the milder weather and the distraction it brings from pending
exams. On campus it’s a tricky time of the year –
life at once slows down and accelerates as we enjoy outdoor leisure
released from winter’s grip yet anticipate the end of classes,
propelling us toward finals and into the “real” world.
I hope your spring is both a time of relaxation and anticipation,
enjoying the fragrant outdoors while looking forward to the new
challenges this season of promise and budding life brings.
Going to be near Kutztown? You can still get a
fudgesicle at Mr. Food to cool you off and still listen to the
buggies clip clop their way behind Old Main. Stop back and
see us.
Best Regards –

Janice (Clay) Gomez '73
Remember Pen Pals? As kids many of us, through school
or off the back of a comic book, signed up to be pen pals.
We’d get the address of a foreign student around our
age with which we shared a few letters, mainly focusing
on the routines our daily lives and hints about the cultural
area in which we lived.
Recently Janice looked up
her child hood pen pal from Scotland, Kathleen Knox, and
the two were reunited after 31 years.

The
Job Search - Pam Gockley Success Story
Pam Gockley was just a regular person with a dream. She wanted to
go to college and find a good job with an excellent compensation
package and a great work environment. She decided to attend Kutztown
University to earn her degree and she was certain that finding a
job would not be difficult.
However, Pam was unable to find many job opportunities after graduating,
and, when she finally did get some offers, she was not satisfied
for many reasons. But Pam is not a quitter, and she continued searching
until 1996. One day she had an idea that would both make her successful
and provide her with a great job.

Alumna on Survivor: Palau Islands
If you have never been a fan of Survivor, this was the season to
watch! This season Wanda Shirk, a Kutztown University alumna,
and 19 other “castaways” will try to outwit, outplay
and outlast each other to become the sole survivor and take home
the $1 million prize on the show’s 10th season, “Survivor:
Palau Islands.”
Wacky Wanda Shirk, as she is known, earned her bachelor’s
degree in Bible and speech communication from Wheaton College in
Illinois. And in 1974, she graduated from Kutztown University
with a master’s degree in elementary education. She
now lives in Ulysses, Pa. and has been teaching English to high
school and middle school for 28 years.
Being a parent is a big part of Shirk’s life. She has
two grown children, Dawn and Shawn, was a foster parent to 25 children
and she has hosted exchange students from around the world.
According to the Reading Eagle, Shirk sent her audition tape to
CBS in June, and then went to Philadelphia to interview with 1,000
other candidates in August. Finally, in Los Angeles she took psychological
and physical tests in September. She was chosen and the filming
began in October and she returned home in December. The outcome
is being kept under tight wraps and Shirk is not allowed to discuss
the show until the final episode.
CBS officials said this season’s contestants are the most
diverse, ranging from 57 to 21 years of age. The season premiered
at 8 p.m. Thursday, February 17 on CBS. “Everything
the survivors have come to expect will be wiped out in the first
10 minutes” the official CBS website states.
The show was filmed on the Palau Islands in the South Pacific.
The Palau islands are described as the ‘eighth wonder of the
world,’ where colorful wildlife, dense jungles and an underwater
world beyond belief are haunted by the wreckage and remnants of
World War II.

Your University
What
is the KU Foundation?
The KU Foundation is a private corporation established as
the fund-raising agency of Kutztown University. The Foundation
was established in 1983 when the Kutztown College Foundation
and the George B. Hancher Endowment Fund were merged. This
merger brought all university fund-raising into one unified
effort. The Foundation status provides donors with the assurance
that their funds will be used only as they indicated and
that gifts cannot be controlled by the state. Foundation
resources are used to address University-identified needs.
