Message from the Director

Our first e-newsletter was a huge success. The alumni office received many messages of congratulations and appreciation commending us for publishing a newsletter that will keep our alumni informed and in touch with their alma mater (kudos to Kim Justeson, assistant alumni director!). These thoughts of thanks and encouragement remind us that Kutztown University is well represented all over the United States and internationally through the lives and work of our alumni.

While our electronic newsletter, newly named KU Alumni Connection, will be a fun, quick and convenient way to keep in touch, let us not forget that the most meaningful way for folks to be connected with and feel a part of something is through good old person-to-person contact. The University's beautiful campus and its buildings are a large part of our memories from our college days, but mostly it was and is the people we came to know that form the foundation of our connection and fondness for KU.

So - continue to enjoy the KU Alumni Connection, but also please try and keep that personal connection growing by attending alumni events and gatherings in your area and on campus when you can. Stop by the alumni office and say hello the next time you're in Kutztown, and don't forget about Homecoming on Saturday, October 30. If you haven't made plans to attend yet, be sure to see details below.

Best Regards,

Director of Alumni Communications

Meet the Rest of Your Alumni Team!

Name that Newsletter!

The Alumni Association is pleased to announce that the name for the e-Newsletter is KU Alumni Connection. Thank you to the winner of the "Name That Newsletter" contest, Melissa Hershey '87. The winning name was chosen by the Alumni Association Board of Directors at their first meeting of the academic year on Saturday, September 11 from a list of more than 25 entries. Melissa says she submitted the name because she feels it is easily recognizable and evokes a sense of what the newsletter is intended to do -connect alumni to the university. Our thanks to everyone who submitted names for the newsletter. We received some very clever ones and wish we could have used them all!

Dennis Boyer, '74.

Did you know that the Kutztown Farmers Market is haunted? Have you heard about the Dryville Haunted House or the ghosts of the Topton Hunters? If not you may need to brush up on your Pennsylvania Dutch supernatural folklore. Dennis Boyer, a 1974 graduate of Kutztown State College may be able to help.

2004 President’s Scholarship Ball

On Saturday, November 6 the University community will come together at the President’s Scholarship Ball in Keystone Hall. Cocktails, dinner, and dancing to the Steven Sher Orchestra will ensure an evening to remember at this black tie affair. The silent and live auctions will liven things up with a wide variety of items donated from businesses, alumni, and friends. Auction items offer something for everyone from a Tahitian black pearl and diamond pendant or deeded time share in the Poconos to a gourmet wine basket or boxing gloves signed by Smokin’ Joe Frasier. Last year’s Ball raised $64,000 for student merit scholarships and we hope to exceed that this year. We hope to see you there!

“Kicking Off New Traditions” is the theme for the October 30, 2004 Homecoming celebration. Kutztown is steeped in tradition and this year we’re looking to kick off some new traditions. Some new traditions we’ll see this year include a pep rally and Tailgate City. The Friday night pep rally will include appearances by mascots Goldie and Griz, the KU Marching Unit and the Homecoming Court. Immediately following the pep rally will be a fireworks display, the first on campus in many years. (read more)

Extended Learning

Center for Lifelong Learning Partners with Local Organizations
The Center for Lifelong Learning and Professional Development has been a part of the university under its current name for just three years, but has existed at the University in some form for more than 25 years. The Center is involved with numerous initiatives, some of them better known than others, such as the Advant*age Program in which senior residents of Kutztown may attend courses free of charge. A central element of the Center's mission is to meet the community's need to respond to the unique goals of adult learners for education, training, and personal learning. To accomplish this mission, the Center often partners with organizations and companies to bring quality learning and life enrichment programs to the greater Kutztown community. This academic year brings three exciting partnerships.

Advancing Your University

What is the KU Foundation?

The KU Foundation is a private corporation established as the fund-raising agency of Kutztown University. The Foundation was established in 1983 when the Kutztown College Foundation and the George B. Hancher Endowment Fund were merged. This merger brought all university fund-raising into one unified effort. The Foundation status provides donors with the assurance that their funds will be used only as they indicated and that gifts cannot be controlled by the state. Foundation resources are used to address University-identified needs.
