Bamberger, who was selected after a national search, will direct
Kutztown’s 21-sport, NCAA Division II athletics program. He takes
over for Jack Entriken, who has served as interim director of
athletics since August when Clark Yeager stepped down from his role
as director of athletics to become the school’s assistant to the
provost.
“Kutztown University is pleased to welcome Greg Bamberger as its new
athletics director,” Cevallos said. “His background, experience and
personal attributes will assist him in leading our athletics
department that has already been moving toward excellence.”
Bamberger, 44, comes to Kutztown from Glenville State College in
West Virginia, where he has served as director of athletics since
January 2002. Bamberger managed the Pioneers’ 11-sport NCAA
Division II program. Bamberger’s responsibilities there included
fund raising, event management, supervision of coaching staff,
facility management, public relations, budget allocation and
management, and NCAA compliance. He also oversees the school’s
intramural program.
Prior
to taking over as director of athletics, Bamberger was an assistant
football coach and lecturer at Glenville for three semesters. He
was the assistant head coach, offensive coordinator and coached the
offensive line for the Pioneers. Bamberger was the football team’s
travel coordinator and NCAA compliance liaison. He also developed
the athletics department drug testing program.
From
1997 until 2000, Bamberger was a district sales coordinator for
AFLAC, a company specializing in employee benefits.
Bamberger’s career in athletics began at Virginia Military
Institute, where he was an assistant football coach from 1985-89.
He was an assistant football coach at Southeast Missouri State from
1989-1996, serving as offensive coordinator from 1994-96.
Bamberger earned his master’s degree in sports administration from
Temple University in 1989. He is a 1982 graduate of Duke University
with a bachelor’s degree in management sciences. He was a
three-year starter for the Blue Devils’ football team, serving as
co-captain in 1981. Bamberger was born in Abington, Pa., and is a
graduate of Phoenixville High School. He and his wife, Bernadette,
have three children.
“Members of the search committee, Dr. Cevallos and I were very
interested in having Greg Bamberger as our director of athletics,”
said Dr. Chick Woodard, vice president for student services
and campus life, who oversees the Intercollegiate Athletics Services
Department. “We believe Mr. Bamberger possesses the skills,
qualities and integrity that will help maintain the course already
set, as well as to help us achieve even higher plateaus of
excellence. He is committed to student-athletes achieving their
dreams of excelling athletically, while also maintaining high
academic standards and engaging in community service activities.”
“I am
very excited about the opportunity to be the next director of
athletics at Kutztown University,” Bamberger said. “I look forward
to working with the coaches and support staff of the department, as
well as the administration, faculty and staff of the university. I
am delighted to take on the challenge of leading the department to
maintain and improve upon the success and visibility of athletics,
as well as the university.”
Kutztown University is a member of the Pennsylvania State System of
Higher Education and the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference.
