CHAMPIONSHIP PREVIEW
KU women have four swimmers ranked in top eight heading into
psac meet
MECHANICSBURG,
Pa. — The Kutztown University women’s swimming team has four
individual swimmers ranked in the top eight in nine events scheduled
to take place at the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference meet at
Cumberland Valley High School in Mechanicsburg, Pa.
KU will have a
total of 13 swimmers competing at the PSAC meet this weekend. The
top eight swimmers after preliminaries will race in the Championship Finals,
while ninth through 16th place will compete in the Consolation Finals.
The following
Golden Bear Swimmers will take top eight qualifying times into the
PSAC Championships:
Ashley Singer
(sr. Lititz/Warwick) and Steph Jeppesen (so.
Bethlehem/Liberty) lead the Golden Bears ranked in the top eight
of three individual events each.
Singer is second in
the 500 freestyle, with her best time of 5:08.25 coming at the
Franklin & Marshall College Invitational on Dec. 1. West Chester’s
Danielle Ierley is in the No. 1 spot with a time of 5:07.88.
Singer is ranked
fourth in the 200 freestyle. Her best time was 1:54.58, which she
swam at the Franklin & Marshall Invite. She is seventh in the 1,000
freestyle after swimming the event in 10:51.36 against Millersville
on Nov. 14 at Keystone Hall. Five West Chester swimmers are ahead of
her in the top seven.
Jeppesen’s best
ranking is in the 200 breaststroke, as she is second time with her
time of 2:24.76, set at the Franklin & Marshall College Invite. Her
time of 1:07.72 in the 100 breaststroke, also set at the Franklin &
Marshall Invite, has her ranked sixth in the PSAC. She’s also ranked
in the top eight in the 200 individual medley with her qualifying
time of 2:13.18 against Shippensburg on Jan. 25. Her performance has
her ranked seventh in the PSAC.
Allison Sheely (fr.
Enola/Trinity) is ranked eighth in the 200 backstroke, with her
2:13.20 on Feb. 2 against Rowan.
Laura Heebner (jr.
Easton/Easton) just cracked the top eight with her time of
2:16.24 in the 200 butterfly at Keystone Hall against Shippensburg
on Jan. 25. She’s also ranked ninth in the 400 individual medley
with her time of 4:48.23, a little more than a second out of the top
eight.
Five KU relay teams
are ranked in the top eight and will compete for a PSAC title over
the weekend.
Jill Pantelides
(sr. Lansdowne/Archbishop Prendergast), Casey Pollard (fr.
Easton/Easton), Sheely and Jeppesen will lead the 200 freestyle
relay team, which qualified for the seventh spot with a 1:41.34 on
Dec. 1 at the Franklin & Marshall College Invite.
Pantelides and
Pollard, along with Staci McGinty (sr. Jamison/Central
Bucks East) and Singer, will swim for the Golden Bears in the
400 freestyle relay. The four swimmers qualified for the sixth spot
at the Franklin & Marshall Invite with their time of 3:39.27.
The 800 freestyle
relay team, comprised of Pantelides, Singer, McGinty and Jeppesen,
is ranked seventh with their time of 7:58.65 set at the Franklin &
Marshall Invite.
KU’s 200 medley
relay team of Sheely, Jeppesen, Singer and Pollard is ranked sixth.
They set the qualifying mark at the Franklin & Marshall Invite with
a time of 1:51.86.
The Golden Bears’
top ranked team is the 400 medley relay team, which is fifth in the
PSAC. Sheely, Jeppesen, Singer and McGinty swam the race in 4:04.01
at the Franklin & Marshall Invite

BONIFAS,
WILLIAMS LEAD KU INTO WEEKEND'S PSAC CHAMPIONSHIPS
MECHANICSBURG,
Pa. — The Kutztown University men’s swimming team has two
individual swimmers ranked in the top eight in three events

Sean Bonifas
(sr. Lancaster/Hempfield) qualified in the top eight in two
events at the Franklin & Marshall College Invitational. Bonifas is
ranked seventh in the 100 breaststroke (1:00.94) and eighth in the
200 breaststroke (2:16.15).
Nicholas
Williams (fr. Holmdel, N.J./Holmdel) is ranked seventh in the
200 freestyle after qualifying at the Franklin & Marshall Invite.
Williams will lead
two of the Golden Bears relay teams, the 400 freestyle relay and 800
freestyle relay team, into the weekend’s meet. Both squads, which
qualified for the PSAC meet at the Franklin & Marshall Invite, are
ranked in the top four in the conference.
The 400 freestyle
relay, which includes Stephen Krater (so. Port Carbon/Pottsville
Area), Derek Orr (jr. Easton/Easton) and Gabriel Recio
(fr. Lancaster/Hempfield), had a qualifying time of 3:12.65.
Orr, Krater and
Williams, along with John Pandish (jr. Milford/Delaware Valley),
make up the 800 freestyle relay team, which qualified with a time of
7:07.51.
The members of the
400 freestyle team will also compete for the title in the 200
freestyle relay. The four swimmers are ranked fifth in the PSAC
after qualifying with at time of 1:27.82 at the Franklin & Marshall
Invite.
Recio, Bonifas, Orr
and Scott Arnold (sr. Manchester/Northeastern) are ranked
sixth in the 200 medley relay, while Recio, Bonifas, Arnold and
Williams are ranked fifth in the 400 medley relay.
The 200 MR
qualified with a time of 1:39.90, while the 400 MR qualified with a
3:38.85.

KU'S FOURNIER
OPENS PSAC MEET WITH SEVENTH-PLACE FINISH
MECHANICSBURG,
Pa. — The Kutztown men’s and women’s swimming teams kicked off
the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Championships at
Cumberland Valley High School Thursday.
The only event for
the opening day of the PSAC meet is the 1,000-yard freestyle.
Heading into Friday’s first session, which starts at 10 a.m., the KU
men’s team is in fifth place with 16 points. West Chester is leading
with 50 points, and Clarion (26), Bloomsburg (22) and Edinboro (17)
round out the top four.
The KU women are in
seventh place with six points. West Chester again leads the meet
with 48 points, while Indiana (Pa.) has 27 and Edinboro has 21. Also
ahead of Kutztown is Bloomsburg (19), Clarion (16) and Shippensburg
(11).
For the KU men,
Greg Fournier (sr. Warrington/Central Bucks East) finished
seventh in the 1,000 freestyle with a time of 10:03.04, giving KU 12
points.
Scott Thomas (jr.
Friedensburg/Blue Mountain) finished 13th with a time of
10:14.47 and earned the men’s team four points.
Heather Wolkom
(so. Rumson, N.J./Rumson Fair-Haven Reg.) scored the women’s
team six points with her 11th-place finish in the 1,000 freestyle.
She swam the race in a time of 10:52.86.

SINGER WINS 500
FREESTYLE; WOMEN IN SEVENTH, MEN IN FIFTH
MECHANICSBURG,
Pa. — The Kutztown University men’s swimming team is in fifth
place with 117 points after two days at the Pennsylvania State
Athletic Conference Championships at Cumberland Valley High School
in Mechanicsburg, Pa.
The women's team,
led by a first-place victory in the 500-yard freestyle from
Ashley Singer (sr. Lititz/Warwick), is in seventh place with 94
points.
West Chester is in
first with 234 and Clarion trails in second with 184. Indiana (Pa.)
is in third with 146 points with Edinboro 12 points behind in
fourth. KU is just five points out of fifth place as Shippensburg
has 99 points and Bloomsburg has 98.
Singer swam the 500
freestyle in a time of 5:06.24 (NCAA provisional B-cut). Her
PSAC title marked the first PSAC title for the Golden Bear women
since the 1998 championship (Claudine Gruver and Elizabeth Thoryk).
“It was a great
race,” KU coach Tim Flannery said.
Staci McGinty (sr. Jamison/Central Bucks East) finished 14th in the
500 freestyle (5:19.72) giving KU three points.
Steph Jeppesen
(so. Bethlehem/Liberty) finished fourth in the 200 individual
medley (2:12.57).
The 200 freestyle
relay team of Allison Sheely (fr. Enola/Trinity), Jill
Pantelides (sr. Lansdowne/Archbishop Prendergast), Casey
Pollard (fr. Easton/Easton) and Jeppesen finished eighth in a
time of 1:41.23.
Sheely, Jeppesen,
Laura Heebner (jr. Easton/Easton) and Singer led the 400
individual medley relay team to a fifth-place finish (4:04.61).
On the men’s side,
West Chester also is in the lead with 256 points, while Clarion is
in second with 219.5. Shippensburg with 147.5 points and Indiana
(Pa.) with 120, round out the top four. Edinboro is in sixth with 97
points and Bloomsburg is seventh with 66.
Nicholas
Williams (fr. Holmdel, N.J./Holmdel) highlighted the day for the
me, finishing fourth in the 500 freestyle (4:44.99), earning KU 15
points. Greg Fournier (sr. Warrington/Central Bucks East) and
Scott Thomas (jr. Friedensburg/Blue Mountain also scored
points for KU in the 500 freestyle, with Fournier finishing 12th
(4:51.83) and Thomas taking 14th (4:53.28).
The 200 freestyle
relay team of Derek Orr (jr. Easton/Easton), Gabriel Recio
(fr. Lancaster/Hempfield), Williams and Stephen Krater (so.
Port Carbon/Pottsville Area) finished fifth in a time of
1:27.03.
John Pandish (jr.
Milford/Delaware Valley) finished 11th in the 200 individual
medley (2:01.19), while Sean Bonifas (sr. Lancaster/Hempfield)
finished 12th (2:01.77).
Orr took 10th in
the 50 freestyle (22.12) and Recio finished 11th (22.17).
Thomas, Bonifas,
Scott Arnold (sr. Manchester/Northeastern) and Williams led the
400 individual medley relay team to a sixth-place finish (3:36.52).
Day 3 Recap
TWO SCHOOL RECORDS FALL IN DAY 3 AT PSACs
Mechanicsburg,
Pa. – Two Kutztown University school records were set during day
three of competition at the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference
Swimming Championships at Cumberland Valley High School.
Both of the records
came from the women’s team and both involved Steph Jeppesen,
who set the record in the 100 breaststroke, and swam a leg of
KU’s record-setting 800 free relay team.
Jeppesen
eclipsed Kelly Rowan’s 2005 time of 1:06.80 in the preliminaries,
with a time of 1:06.71. In the finals, Jeppesen broke her
hours old mark with a time of 1:06.47, an NCAA B-cut time and good
for third place.
The 800 free relay
team of Ashley Singer, Kerry Choplin, Jeppesen
and Staci McGinty swam a time of 7:55.10, which is .05 faster
than the previous record set in 2006 and good for fifth place
Saturday.
KU’s women are in
seventh place with 220 points, just behind Shippensburg (225) and
Bloomsburg (224). West Chester leads the team standings.
KU’s men are in
fourth place with 243 points. West Chester is first (620), Clarion
second (460.5) and Shippensburg third (291.5).
In other events on
Saturday, the 200 medley relay team of Allison Sheely,
Jeppesen, Singer and Jill Pantelides was fourth in
1:50.78. Singer placed third in the 200 free (1:54.85), while
McGinty was eighth (1:59.67) and Pantelides was 14th
(2:01.16). Also in the 100 breast, Kelli Pry was 10th
(1:09.10) and Heather Wolkom 12th (1:09.88).
Sheely placed ninth in the 100 back (1:01.69).
For KU’s men,
Nick Williams turned in the top individual finish, placing fifth
in the 200 free in an NCAA B-cut time of 1:43.57. Derek Orr
was 11th in 1:46.39. the top finish for KU came in the
800 free relay, where the squad of Williams, John Pandish,
Sean Bonifas and Orr placed third in 7:08.64.
In other men’s
events, the 200 medley relay team of Gabriel Recio,
Bonifas, Scot Arnold and Orr was sixth in
1:38.24. Pandish was seventh in the 400 IM (4:22.90) and
A.J. Guarino was ninth (4:25.28). Arnold placed 13th
in the 100 fly (53.86), while Bonifas was sixth in the 100
breast (1:00.47) and Nelson Martinez was 13th
(1:04.31). Recio took 11th place in the 100 back
(56.09).
Action concludes
with a full slate of events on Sunday.

TWO MORE RECORDS
FALL, MEN FOURTH, WOMEN SEVENTH AT PSACs
Mechanicsburg,
Pa. – The PSAC Swimming Championships concluded
Sunday with the KU
men's squad finishing in fourth and the women coming in seventh.
The women scored 295
team points, and beat out California (Pa.) for the 7th spot by 43
points. West Chester won the team title with 703 points, ahead
of second-place Clarion (523.5). IUP was third (407), followed
by Edinboro (370), Bloomsburg (328), Shippensburg (315), KU,
California (PA) (252), Lock Haven (119), Millersville (113.5), East
Stroudsburg (86), Slippery Rock (79) and Mansfield (38).
The men finished
with 326 team points, 24 ahead of fifth place Edinboro, while
Shippensburg placed third and was 115.5 points ahead of KU. West
Chester was first with 919 points. Clarion was second (631.5),
followed by Shippensburg (451.5), KU, Edinboro (302), IUP (289) and
Bloomsburg (287).
For the women,
Singer set a school record in the 100 freestyle, leading off the
400 free relay with a time of 52.70, breaking Claudine Gruver's school record of 52.74.
Singer placed sixth in the open 100 free with a time of
52.88.
Steph Jeppesen
broke another school record, this time it was the 200
breaststroke with a time of 2:24.36, which was good for second
place. Pry turned in a time of 2:31.98, good for a
12th place finish.
The 400 freestyle
relay squad finished 8th, as Singer, Pantelides, Sheely and
McGinty turned in a time of 7:55.10.
Other women's
placewinners on Sunday were Kerry Choplin in the 1650 free (13th,
18:27.12) and Christine Paski in the 1650 free (15th, 19:34.28). In the 200
butterfly, Heeber finished ninth, turning in a time of 2:17.54,
and Christie Paski placed 12th with a time of 2:19.55.
Nick Williams
had an outstanding performance in the 100 freestyle finals, as he
finished 4th and trimmed nearly four seconds off his preliminary
time with a time of 47.91. Orr finished 10th in the event
with a time of 48.47.
KU's 400 freestyle
relay quartet of Orr, Recio, Krater, and Williams
combined to turn in a 6th place effort with a time of 3:13.72.
Other place winners
for KU on Sunday were Nelson Martinez in the 200 breast
(12th, 2:19.84), John Pandish in the 200 fly (11th, 2:01.41)
and Scott Arnold in the 200 fly (12th, 2:01.75).
The fourth place finish
for the men and seventh for the women match their finishes from a year
ago at the PSAC Championships.
