JEPPESEN SHINES, WOMEN FINISH SEVENTH AT PSAC MEET

MECHANICSBURG, Pa. — Stephanie Jeppesen (jr. Bethlehem/Liberty) set three individual school records, leading the Kutztown University women’s swimming team to a seventh-place finish at the 2009 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Championships at Cumberland Valley High School.

KU scored a total of 267.5 points in the four-day event. West Chester won the women’s team title with 660.5 points, followed by Clarion, which had 560 points. California, Pa., had 495 points, Gannon 352.5 and Indiana, Pa., 287.5 to round out the top five.

Jeppesen set school records with NCAA A-Cut times in the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke and the 200 individual medley.

In the 100 breaststroke, she broke a school record with a time of 1:04.30, while placing third in the finals. Her time broke the record she set earlier in the prelims, when she recorded a time of 1:05.44.

Jeppesen's record-breaking performance in the 200-yard IM with a time of 2:07.51 was a NCAA-A cut time. Jeppesen finished second in the race, breaking the school record set by Claudine Gruver in 1997.

She finished second in the 200 breaststroke in a record time of 2:17.19, an NCAA A-Cut time.

Jeppesen also was a member of the school record-breaking 800 freestyle relay team, swimming with Nicole Hinsdale (fr. Glen Mills/Bayard Rustin), Kerry Choplin (so. Thorofare, N.J./West Deptford) and Heather Wolkom (jr. Rumson, N.J./Rumson Fair-Haven). The four KU swimmers finished fifth in the time of 7:52.94.

Wolkom set a school record in the 1,000 free, placing fifth with a KU record-setting time of 10:31.88. The time was also an NCAA-B qualifying mark. She broke the previous record of 10:42.18 by Ashley Singer in 2007.

Wolkom also set a school record in the 1,650 freestyle, placing sixth with an NCAA B-Cut time of 17:53.17.

Alex Crigler (so. West Lawn/Wilson High School) finished in ninth (17:56.60) behind Wolkom and Choplin was 13th (18:03.26), both recording NCAA B-Cut times.

In the 500 free, Wolkom placed sixth with a time of 5:10.61, which was an NCAA-B cut time. Crigler was 14th in the event (5:16.20).

Crigler also placed 11th in 10:42.79, also an NCAA B-Cut time. Choplin was 15th in 10:50.41.

Laura Heebner (sr. Easton/Easton) was 12th in the 400 IM, swimming it in 4:45.00, a new KU school record. Choplin followed with a 16th-place finish (4:50.34).

In the 200 butterfly, Heebner placed 14th (2:17.85).

Hinsdale placed 10th in the 200 backstroke (2:09.93) and Jordan Shapiro (fr. Trenton N.J./Princeton) was 12th (2:11.35). Shapiro also took 12th in the 100 backstroke (59.86).

Katie Kelly (so. Downingtown/Downingtown) was 15th in the 100 butterfly (1:02.80).

The women's 400 medley relay team of Shapiro, Heebner, Allison Sheely (so. Enola/Trinity) and Jeppesen placed sixth with a time of 4:00.24.

The 400 freestyle relay team of Jeppesen, Hinsdale, Sheely and Shapiro placed eighth with a time of 3:37.09.

The women’s 200 medley relay team, comprised of Sheely, Jeppesen, Hinsdale and Shapiro, finished fifth in a time of 1:49.06.


KU MEN PLACE SEVENTH AT THE PSAC CHAMPIONSHIPS

MECHANICSBURG, Pa. — The Kutztown University men’s swimming team finished eighth at the 2009 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Championships at Cumberland Valley High School.

The KU men’s team finished eighth at the meet with 177 points. West Chester won the team title with 812 points. Shippensburg was second with 544.5 and Clarion was third with 504. Gannon (362) and Bloomsburg (342.5) rounded out the top five.

Joe Lahovski (fr. Allentown/Emmaus) led the Golden Bears with two top-10 finishes and a 15th-place finish.

Lahovski was ninth in the 1,650 freestyle (16:37.71) and 10th in the 1,000 freestyle (9:48.87). He added a 15th-place finish in the 500 free (4:50.05).

Scott Thomas (sr. Schuylkill Haven/Blue Mountain) picked up the Golden Bears’ best finish, sixth in the 200 backstroke with a time of 1:56.44.

Thomas also placed 15th in the 400 IM, followed by A.J. Guarino (so. Royersford/Downingtown), who was 16th (4:22.48).

John Pandish (sr. Milford/Delaware Valley) picked up a seventh-place finish in the 400 IM (4:15.61). He also finished 16th in the 200 IM (2:00.56).

In the 200 breaststroke, Jeff Travor (so. Quakertown/Quakertown Community) was 13th (2:15.04) and Nelson Martinez (sr. Allentown/Dieruff) was 15th (2:16.03).

David Shedleski (fr. Mechanicsburg/Trinity) placed 14th in the 100 breaststroke (1:01.65), while Travor was 16th (1:01.90).

Derek Orr (sr. Easton/Easton) also placed 15th in the 200 freestyle (1:46.74).

In the 100 backstroke, Matt Moates (fr. South Plainfield, N.J./South Plainfield) finished 13th (55.26) and Recio was 15th (57.18).

The 400 freestyle relay team of Orr, Travor, Pandish and Stephen Krater (jr. Port Carbon/Pottsville Area) finished eighth (3:13.58).

The 800 freestyle relay team was seventh, with Lahovski, Pandish, Krater and Orr swimming it in 7:10.61.

Moates, Shedleski, Gabriel Recio (so. Lancaster/Hempfield) and Orr led the men’s 200 medley relay team to an eighth-place finish (1:38.96).

The team of Krater, Orr, Recio and John Nicklous (sr. Philadelphia/Father Judge) finished in eighth in the 200 free relay with a time of 1:28.32.

KU's 400 medley relay team was also eighth in 3:39.72. That team consisted of Thomas, Travor, Pandish and Krater.
