— The Kutztown University men’s tennis team will open
competition at the NCAA Division II Championships against Lynn
University on Wednesday at Rollins College in Altamonte Springs,
Fla.
The Golden Bears (15-4), fresh off their
Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference title and an Atlantic
Region-1 tournament title, are one of 16 teams remaining in Division
II.
KU has won seven straight matches,
led by
Lukas Labitsch (sr. Bruck an der Mur, AUSTRIA),
who recorded the match-clinching wins in both of the Golden Bears'
regional matches last week.
Labitsch enters championship play
riding a 10-game winning streak in singles, with the majority coming
at the No. 3 spot.
Labitsch and
Arpit
Sharma (jr. Kolkata, INDIA) have won all 12 of their doubles
matches, primarily at No. 2 (10-0) and a few at No. 1 (2-0).
Also riding
momentum into the championships is
Santiago Baquerizo (sr. Guayaquil, ECUADOR). Baquerizo
has nine straight wins in singles matches and won 12 of his last 13, four at
No.2 and the rest as the No. 1 player.
In No. 3 doubles,
Baquerizo and
Jonathan Goulet (jr. Quebec, CANADA) have won 11 of their
last 12 matches, including a current seven straight wins.
Andrew Torrealba (jr. Pembroke Pines, Fla./Charles W. Flanagan)
has been strong in the No. 6 singles spot, winning six straight
matches heading into the contest against Lynn.
Kaushik
Das (Assam, INDIA) has been roaming around the top three
spots in singles play, with the past five matches in the No. 1 spot.
He has a 6-6 overall record in singles, and 9-4 record in doubles
with
Rubens Vianna (sr. Belo Horizonte/BRAZIL).
The Golden Bears
first-round opponent Lynn University enters the contest with a
record of 18-3, winners of the South Regional and ranked No. 2
nationally in the NCAA Division II.
The doubles team of
Tomas Racak and Alex Voirin has 14 wins compared to
no losses, while playing primarily out of the No. 2 (8-0) and No. 3 (6-0)
spots.
In singles play,
Racak holds a 13-3 record, including 12-3 record in the No. 2 spot.
Voirin has seen play in the No. 2 through 6 spots, overall he has a
singles record of 10-5.
The Fighting
Knights No. 1 singles spot has been held by Julien Carsuzaa
in all but one dual match. He has a record of 15-3. Carsuzaa has a
record of 16-5 in the No. 1 doubles slot with three different
teammates. He is unbeaten while playing with Alessandro Sarra
(5-0) and has double-digit wins with Miloslav Navratil
(10-5).
Lynn finished the
season a perfect 6-0 in conference play; however, they dropped the
Sunshine State Conference Championship title to Barry University.
