Das a finalist in singles, semifinalst with Joerns in Doubles

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. — Rohini Das (jr. Calcutta, INDIA) finished as the runner-up in singles and was a semifinalist in doubles to lead Kutztown's women's tennis team at the PSAC Individual Championships at Bloomsburg University.

Das upset No. 2 seed Kayla Blackburn of Slippery Rock to advance to Sunday's finals vs. California's Alina Stanila. Das fell 6-2, 6-2 in the finals match.  Das, who had a bye in the first round, defeated Emily Shubra, of Indiana (Pa.), 6-2, 6-0, and Mercyhurst’s Kim Ezzo 6-1, 6-4 to advance to the semifinals.

Teaming with Barbara Joerns (jr. Ludwigshafen, GERMANY)., Das won a quarterfinal match vs. Bloomsburg's Carney/Palko before falling in the semis to Helena VanEysendeyk/Axelle Fernadez (Cal).

Joerns and Sabrina Arnaud (jr. Pintendre, CANADA) each won first-round matches in the singles championship bracket, but fell in the second round.

Labitsch, Sharma win doubles title; Torrealba second in singles

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. — Arpit Sharma (jr. Kolkata, INDIA) and Lukas Labitsch (sr. Bruck an der Mur, AUSTRIA) won the 2008 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) doubles championship on Sunday at Bloomsburg University.

The duo defeated Mijo Cotic/Adam Marnik of Mercyhurst, 8-6,to win the title.  It was the second-straight doubles crown for Labitsch, who also won in 2007.  After a first-round bye, they defeated Bloomsburg’s Alan Hummel and Mark Schroeder 8-1 to advance to the final.

In singles play, Andrew Torrealba (jr. Pembroke Pines, Fla./Charles W. Flanagan) upset top-seeded Tim Hansson of Mercyhurst, 6-4 and 6-4, to advance to Sunday's final.  There, Torrealba fell in straight sets to Bloomsburg's Fernando Perez. 

Perez had defeated Sharma in the other semifinal earlier on Sunday, denying the all-KU final.

both advanced to the semifinals with two singles wins in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Individual Championships Saturday at Bloomsburg University.

Torrealba beat Jeff Neuhfer 6-3, 6-4 in the quarterfinals after beating Mercyhurst’s Cotic 6-3, 6-4 in the first round.

Sharma won 5-7, 6-2 (1-0) in the first round over Millersville’s Drew Slocum and 6-1, 6-1 over West Chester’s Matt Thomas in the second round.

Bobby Zerwick (so. Bowers/Kutztown) also competed in the singles bracket, falling in the first round to Bloomsburg’s Neuhfer, 6-0, 6-0.
