KUTZTOWN, PA –
Kutztown recorded a 5-0 win over Stonehill in the first round of the
NCAA Division II Men’s East Regional tournament at Keystone Courts
Friday morning.
The
Golden Bears swept all three doubles matches, with Mukundan
Nandakumar and Alok Bhide teaming to defeat Jack
Granato and Pat Blomberg at first doubles, 8-3. Somdeep
Appineni and Radoslaw Hlubinski survived a 9-7 decision
over Brandon Towers and Matthew Grabala at second
doubles. Velmurugan Annamalai and Johannes Wingerter
notched an 8-0 shutout over Andy DeVita and Kevin Charland
at third doubles.
KU
needed just two singles points to finish the Chieftans, with fourth
seeded Annamalai and sixth seeded Hlubinski recording the decisive
points. Annamalai defeated Towers 6-0, 6-0; while Hlubinksi downed
Matt Hansen 6-0, 6-2.
Kutztown (15-4) advances to face the winner of Friday’s second
opening-round match between Assumption and Queens (NY). Stonehill’s
season ends with a 10-8 mark.

KUTZTOWN, PA – Assumption
College recorded a 5-2 victory over Queens (NY) College in an NCAA
Division II Men’s Tennis East Region first-round match at Kutztown
University’s Keystone Courts.
The Greyhounds won
two of three doubles points and three of four completed singles
points for the victory.
Assumption took the
2-1 lead winning second and third doubles. Matt Stopp and
James Newman won at second doubles, while Alex Madrigal
and Dan Doenges took third doubles, both by 8-5 scores.
Chris Mullins and Ricardo Yepes got the Knights on the
board with an 8-5 win at first doubles.
Goldman (6-2, 6-2)
and Stopp (6-4, 6-4) won the top two singles seeds, while fifth
seeded Madrigal won 6-1, 6-0 to finish off the match. Jeff Haich
won 6-2, 6-3 at sixth seed for Queens.
Assumption advances
to face Kutztown in the second round on Saturday at 2:30 PM. The
winner advances to the NCAA Championships in Orlando, FL, May
12-15. This is the second-straight year Assumption and Kutztown
will meet in the second round for the right to advance to
nationals.

KUTZTOWN, PA – Kutztown
University won its third-straight NCAA East Regional, with a 5-0 win
over Assumption College at Keystone Courts Saturday afternoon.
With the victory,
Kutztown advances to the NCAA Championship, May 12-15, in Orlando,
FL.

The Golden Bears
swept all three doubles matches, with Mukundan Nandakumar and
Alok Bhide teaming to win at first doubles (8-5), Somdeep
Appineni and Radoslaw Hlubinski coming from behind to win
second doubles (8-6), and Velmurugan Annamalai and
Johannes Wingerter taking the third match (8-2).
In singles action,
Hlubinski cruised to a 6-0 6-1 win at sixth seed. The decisive
point came from fourth singles, where Annamalai gutted out a tough
7-5, 7-6 (4) straight-set win. The rest of the singles matches were
close affairs as well. At first singles, Nandakumar and Michael
Goldman split their first two sets, as did Bhide and Matt
Stopp at #2 and KU’s Thorsten Maier and AC’s Alex
Madrigal at fifth. Assumption’s James Newman led
Wingerter by a set at third singles when the match ended.
Kutztown (16-4) will
face Great Lakes Region winner Ferris State (Mich.) in the round of
16 on Wednesday. Assumption (16-1) suffered its first and only loss
of the season.
